When there's a character named "God" in it?
If it were pushing atheism, you'd think they'd all go looking for God and not find him.

FYI, the story of The Golden Compass is about fighting tyrany, not religion.

I've read the books and I haven't read a single post that is negative about it where the person has even the slightest notion of what the story is actually about.

The author, Pullman has said that the Authority is the God of the Inquisition, the burners of "witches", and the God that people claim to be acting in the name of when they do an evil act. Whether the Authority is supposed to literally be God, or whether he exists merely as a metaphor for that God created by human corruption, is really up to you to decide for yourself. Keep in mind that Xaphania said that the Authority wasn't the Creator, only an angel who gave himself titles and power since he was the first. Whether Dust adequately fills the role of God is also open to debate.

It isn't as clear in the movie; but in the books the main enemy is a Church, run by a character known as God. The author is an avowed atheist and opposed to religion, although his work could easily be seen as a warning about the misuse and abuse of faith more than the failings of faith itself..

It's pushing independent thinking and a rejection of authoritarianism. Some people seem to think that's equivalent to pushing atheism.

I don't know because I have not seen the movie. However, the large protests against it have now piqued my curiosity to see a movie that I probably would not have bothered with.

Read about the author. He wrote the book to mirror narnia, yet instead of joining god, they are killing him.
