They'll answer that going to hell is your 'choice', because god gives you a way to 'salvation'. In other words, they will evade the question.
In answer, hell was invented to scare people into believing in the church's law and thereby obeying it. There was no police force in those days. If they couldn't scare you with hell or bribe you with heaven they had VERY little control. The churches all believe highly in control...

Gee ... Hell seems to be a major topic of discussion tonight!
While Christians affirm unequivocally that God is essentially good and loving, it must be emphasized that complementary to these attributes is the characteristic of justice. A loving being that ignored evil or that treated bad acts and good acts equally would not be good. Hence, if God is good, then God is also just - he must treat evil as evil. So, if any creatures merited the existence of hell, then God could remain essentially good and loving by giving them justice, even if that means some creatures end up in hell. Additionally, they envision that the one sent to hell is absolutely innocent in the matter and had nothing to do with the outcome. On the contrary, Christians have long held that hell is a choice that is made by the one who arrives there. In fact, those who choose hell would not enjoy the pleasures of heaven since those pleasures essentially flow from a right relationship with God.

What does the Bible say the penalty for sin is?
Rom. 6:23: “The wages sin pays is death.”
After one’s death, is he still subject to further punishment for his sins?
Rom. 6:7: “He who has died has been acquitted from his sin.”
Is eternal torment of the wicked compatible with God’s personality?
Jer. 7:31: “They [apostate Judeans] have built the high places of Topheth, which is in the valley of the son of Hinnom, in order to burn their sons and their daughters in the fire, a thing that I had not commanded and that had not come up into my heart.” (If it never came into God’s heart, surely he does not have and use such a thing on a larger scale.)
Illustration: What would you think of a parent who held his child’s hand over a fire to punish the child for wrongdoing? “God is love.” (1Â John 4:8) Would he do what no right-minded human parent would do? Certainly not!

MOST "christian" religions believe in an awful type of hell.
The original scriptures were written in greek and hebrew. Hell or Hades when directly translated means grave.
Religions that use scare tactics such as a fiery hell traslate scriptures incorrectly. When the bible speaks of fire it is speaking of how fire destroys not torments. When God speaks of fire he is talking about how "fire" destroys one thing or another.

Assuming you are referring to Christianity, Christians uphold a belief that it is human nature to turn their back upon the / their loving god of the universe. They believe he still loves each and every human being on the planet, but as a parent to a child - there's always punishment for doing wrong. Christians then look towards the opposite and focus on a loving god that would give the opportunity for the fallen human race to enjoy eternal life in paradise with him.

The only hell that exists is the one we all create for ourselves through our low intelligence and ignorance as to the nature of reality and there is no such ridicules hell that Christians believe all sinners go to.

I love my God and i love his Justice, im so glad for Jesus. if you want to go to hell so badly that you hear about it now and still turn down the gift of salvation then that's your problem.
we can go on and on but t doesn't change the reality that there is a hell and you will go there without Jesus.

My belief in hell is a place Satan provides his children should they pass on. Basically its a place where you can do whatever you want. Whatever makes you happy as a person. That is the true hell.
