I don't think there is a usual way to dress for an engagement session. I think wearing something nice that is you and your fiance is the best way to do it.
My husband and I are t-shirt and jeans type of people. We both wore blue jeans and matching Mickey Mouse shirts, except his was black and mine was red. We got married at Disneyland so this also fit in with the theme of our wedding, and us.
Our session was in many different, close locations and took a little over an hour. We paid $350 for our engagement session since we had already hired this photographer to do our wedding. It also included an 8x10 of one of the pictures and a CD of all the pictures taken.

My husband and I went to a cheap--5 poses and so many prints for like $25 and I regret it. They looked horrible and none were decent.
My little cousin just got hers done by her photographer. She did about 4 changes of clothes and did the whole matchy thing. Yes it seems kitchy at the time but when you see the pictures it looks so great. They did a white dress shirt, a black sweater, and a bright green polo. My favorite was the matching bright green polos. They really looked great. She paid roughly $300 included in her wedding package.
Really at the time we were broke and couldn't afford a photo session. This year I think we will go have it done. It's worth it and many times photographers will run a special. Rent a scenic place like a public garden and book brides all day long for a low introductory price.

Most of the time your engagement pictures will be taken by your photographer and will be included in your package.
We took ours ourselves because we had a nice camera, my husband does photography, and we hadn't chosen our photographer... We just wore earthy colors and did them outside since it was November. Just keep it simple so you can still enjoy the pictures in years to come. (No high couture!)

For our photos we did not elect the full glammed up look. We the two hand on trouble-free black gown pants and a advantageous suitable then we replaced our tops to a lot extra "funnier" tops not something dressy. We have been informed purely approximately 20 photos yet he did fifty two photos with 2 diverse clothing. i think of it incredibly is all as much as the couple in what they elect to look as though and placed on. anybody enjoyed our photos.

we wore jeans, winter boots and thin sweaters. we also brought jackets. we had ours taken in two feet of fresh snow. we didn't match, but just wore neutral colors except i had a red scarf.
we spend about an hour taking pictures and it cost $150, but we didn't get any prints, just a CD of pictures.
