They were twins, but not identical according to the description.
The birth right is a larger portion of the inheritance, usually going to the older son. Esau was just barely older therefore the birth right was to go to him. However, he was more interested in food and sold his birth right to his brother Jacob for some stew.
This should not be confused with the blessing of Isaac which was taken by trickery.

The birthright and the blessing are 2 countless issues. Their mom helped Jacob get the blessing, no longer the birthright. there is not any scriptural point out (that I at the instant comprehend of) that tells of everyone helping Jacob get the birthright from Esau. Why did Jacob want the birthright? 2 capacity reasons; a million, there have been greater supplies given to the guy with the delivery ideal. 2. apparently from scripture; Jacob valued the birthright greater beneficial than Esau did.

The brith right is everything. It ment that Jacob inherited everything his Father had. The flocks, and more importantly the lineage right, meaning that the blood line would be considered his rather than Esaus.

Even though they were twins Esau one was born first holding the others leg. First born son gets all the benefits of inheritance according to that land and times custom.

The birth right bestowed a greater inheritance upon the death of the father, Isaac. Why not want it?

He's a scam artist his whole life--feeling like he must measure up to his brother and acting out all the time...until he wrestles with God, who changes his name from "Trickster" or "Supplanter" to Israel or "Blessed of God."
