My great aunt used to tell this joke... all the dogs went to a dance & hung their bums on the coat hooks when they went in. A fire broke out & they were in such a rush to escape, they grabbed any old bum. To this very day, they smell each other's bum trying to find their own. Lame joke, but kinda cute coming from a 90 year old lady.

Technically, they are sniffing the pheromone glands near the anus. Each dog's glandular emission is distinct...like a person's fingerprints. This "inappropriate" greeting (to you and me) actually allows the dog to know whether this strange dog is friend or foe, and whether (if of the opposite sex) if they are receptive to sexual relations. I'm sure there are other scientific reasons, but those are probably the most common.

The dogs have anal glands located on either side near their anus. The glands secrete a bit of fluid each time the dog does its' business. A dog can tell a lot of info with their nose from the secretions.
