Thought that I'd already posted this question, oh well here we again:

My cap fell off one of my incisors, and I was wondering whether it would be possible to use fixodent (or similar product) to keep it in place for the time being?

My insurance won't kick in again until January and I don't know if this was a cap put on by my current dentist or the one I used to see last year.

My worry is that the adhesive might work too well and damage what is left of the tooth when to cap has to come off and affixed permanently once more.

Yes, you can use Fixodent to temporarily recement the crown in place...there's also a product called DenTemp that will work as well...

If you use toothpaste, and the tooth did not have a root canal treatment done, it will 'burn' when you try to place it... keep that in mind.

Just remember these are temporary 'remedies' until you can schedule an appointment to have permanent cement placed. I would hope that recementing the crown would be free of charge, since it hasn't even been 12 months since the crown was placed.

.........at least that's the policy in our office.

Best of luck~

I would use a bit of toothpaste to stick it back on and see your dentist. If the cap came off because of decay, you don't want to wait too long. If seeing the dentist is absolutely out of the question, I would try any temporary dental cement that you can find at the drugstore. Look inside the cap and see if there is any tooth structure that broke off with it. If so, I really wouldn't wait.

How To Use Fixodent

Fixodent probably won't work. It is intended for dentures, which most people take out every day. It wouldn't hold long enough. It is possible to buy products at the drug store that are intended for temporarily reattaching caps, crowns, etc. This would work better.

Personally, I would call the dentist office and find out who did give it to you and return to that dentist. Doing your own dental work can be a costly mistake. You can get a quote from your dentist office on how much it would cost to re-attach your cap. Most dentists would be willing to work with you on setting up some sort of payment plan. I think you may benefit from calling your dentist and explaining your situation, you may be pleasantly surprised.

HELLO,

FIXODENT MAY BE SAFELY USED UNTIL YOU SEE A DENTIST FOR PERMANENT CEMENTATION. THE FIXODENT WILL NOT LAST FOREVER AND WILL NOT CAUSE DAMAGE TO THE TOOTH PREPARATION.

use vaseline or toothpaste (very temporary). A dentist should only charge about $100.00 to recement, depending on where you are in the country.
