he is 3 years old and was a shelter dog. i know there has to be a way of teaching him not to take stuff off the counters or out of the garbage, even when noone is around to stop him, WITHOUT crating him or having to put him outside. and please, no abvious answers like "dont leave stuff out." i would like a solution to the problem, not just a cover for it. thanks!

I do not know of any quick fixes. You must work with your dog so he knows his boundaries. One thing I picked up from dog training was the "take it" and "leave it" commands. Show him something he is not supposed to have and when he tries to take it, cover it and say "leave it". Do this repeatedly until he picks up on the word and starts to recognize the items and areas you want him to stay clear of. It has probably taken about 6 months but my JRT now behaves even when we are not around.

Some people I've read where they booby trap the counters and trash cans so they have something that makes loud noises (falling cookie tins) when the dog triggers things on the counter or in the can.
There is also an e-collar that comes with proximity sensors. Set the sensors where you don't want the dog to be. Don't know if they are range or directional selective though.
I've had very good luck with my standard e-collar. I can tell when the pooch rattles the lid on the can or jumps up to the counter, etc. Even more effective if you're not visually in the room. One 3 day weekend (or less) works if you're dilligent. If you do use the collar,, learn about it first. You can make some seriouse mistakes with it if you don't, and then you've bad habits that'll be even harder to change.

Well, prevention is the best option. I know it's hard in this case, but could you ask your neighbors to throw the socks away in a more secure fashion or in another spot? Can you keep your dog fenced or leashed so that he cannot access the socks? Otherwise, the only thing to do would be keep the dog otherwise occupied. Give him more exercise so he isn't bored and looking for trouble. Give him other things to chew on and play with. It's very hard to break a habit once it has been formed, and prevention is usually the best option.

That's a tough one, I usually keep everything out of reach that my dogs would get into and don't consider it a cover for it, it seems more like common sense to me. I was visiting a friend with a chocolate lab. named Buster, we had snacks on the coffee table, then left to go shopping, she left the snacks on the table, told Buster to sit and he was still sitting looking at the untouched food when we returned. What a good dog.

i have used mouse traps before...or put some rocks in an empty pop can that the dog would knock over to get to whatever....usually the noise startles them and teaches them off limit places/things

Free feed him and leave plenty of food out for him, and get his favorite toy, and if he has not got one - get him one. Make sure he has a lot of things to occupy him when you are gone. Play with him with these things, so they will have your scent on them.

Discipline. Say "no" when he does something you don't want him to do.
