I seen this 'fact' on Myspace. Is that a true statistic, or is it made up?
If its made up, is there a number we can put to how many people marry their Highschool or college partner?
Thanks,
Tom

that number is not correct. I know some do make it, my grandparents were married when they were 18 and just recently had they 60th anniversary. But not many do. But i also firmly think that if you marry someone as you were young and had a fully happy relationship for five years before it ending. It would still be worth it.

I've been with my highschool sweetheart since I was 15 and he 16. We've been together 8 years and married for 4 we are very happy. Out of all of my married friends we are the only ones married that are high school sweethearts. I dated him from Dec of my freshman year on lol.

To me that statistic sounds way off. I could see it being maybe 40% but even that is very high. I have seen stuff stating that 2% of those married to high school sweethearts actually remain married but I don't know the site or the source off the top of my head.

No, that's not true at all.
There's a BIG difference between those who married their highschool sweethearts, then those who married while in college.
Of course some marriages work out totally fine from either circumstance.
My second oldest sister married her bf from high school, never dated anyone else, and they've been married since 1972!

98% is highly exaggerated. I only know one couple that have married their high school sweetheart. And it can't be that I live in the only place in the world where this happens. Perhaps that was true in the 50s when women didn't see their opportunities.

I think more people marry their colleagues than high school sweetheart. I could name over fifteen couples that met through work, and they're the happiest relationships I've seen!

In my grandparents' generation, that number would have been correct. I have come across almost no one from either my parents' generations or my own who have married their high school/college sweetheart. In today's society, the correct percentage is more likely closer to 33% at most. But as with any statistics, no matter what you do, you will never get an accurate percentage unless you poll every person on the planet. Also, Myspace is just one of countless internet sites to take with a grain of salt since anyone can upload any information they want and people believe it without researching for themselves.

Well, if this is 98% of the people who marry, and "high school or college sweetheart" just means somebody they met while they were in high school or college (and not first boyfriend/girlfriend) I suppose that's possible.
By the broadest possible definition, this is true of me. I met my second-husband-to-be at the age of 28 after going back to college, and he was a 28-year-old PhD student. However, we weren't going to the same college (or even living in the same country...)

That static is total BS. Use your head. Remember that the US is not the only country in the world. Also remember that in some countries Arranged marriages are still a common place. What about war times? Many men in the 50s and 60s never went to college and had to go to war. My husband if from Russia. We didn't meet in college. Also the information age. Online dating is Big now. Religion organizations also play a big part in where you can find your spouse. DON"T LISTEN TO MYSPACE. USE COMMON SENSE!
You can't put a static on marriage unless you ask every single person in the world who is married. I was never asked.

It's true for me-we met in college, and we'll be getting married next summer...I think it's way way more common for someone to marry their college sweetheart than their high school one-which I think attributes to the amount of changes you go through over 4 years at college.

No, I do't think so. Many of my cousins didnt marry their highschool nor college sweetheart, we met them after all that. The one who did it has been married for 22 years now...

Backwards. 98% of people might THINK they are going to marry their highschool/college sweetheart.....but that is definately a made-up statistic.

Myspace is NOT a reliable source of information.

EDIT: Has it happened? All the time. Are there succesful examples....of course. Even a blind squirell will find a nut once in a while. But the odds are definately stacked against you and success rates are under 20%
