Congratulations on making an important decision. Now, to your question:
The next time some PIN head (Jar head is an over-estimation) says the Army doesn't fight tell them to go play with one of their sailors. Matter of fact, a Marine is just a sailor with a personality disorder.
Don't listen to them, The Army fights all the time, and usually kicks the crap out of the Marines in everything, except for whining. That and getting to a beachhead, to which I say THANK YOU VERY MUCH! Although, Normandy show's that the US Army does just fine with beachheads.
Seriously, the Marines are a decent service, and they should be proud of their accomplishments. The Army is no feather-weight either, and have a long and glorious history which dates to the beginning of it all, in this country. Just because you enlist in the Marines doesn't mean you will fight either. I hope you don't have to fight anyone.
The only question you should be worried about is the question from with-in; is this service right for me? What do I get from this? How can I serve BEST? Do you like the ocean, and staying on the ocean for months at a time?
If you do, well then you might be a better Marine, cause then you get to hang out with your little sailor buddies on the way to your big FIGHT.
The Army can give you a better idea of what function you will be serving and specifically assign you an MOS. The Marines can not do that... But they do have "really cute dress blues".
Remember this; a true warrior knows the horrors of combat, and is not so cavalier about FIGHTing and killing anyone. So wherever you go, remember that you are 1st a human, then a Soldier or Barnacle sucking Marine, then a Citizen of the US of A. I wish you the best of success, health, and preparation for and on your journey to becoming a warrior...

Get used to it, the Marines are under the impression that they are the only real military. They change the subject when you remind them that the Army pulled their butts out of a sling at the Chosin Reservoir in Korea. That they were in the first wave in taking back the Philippines, along with an Airborne Assault. I don't remember any Marines fighting in the European Theater during WWII, however, I am sure they would take credit for the defeat of Germany. Can't remember any write ups about the Marines in Grenada (except Clint Eastwood in Heartbreak Ridge) or Panama. You see, inter-service rivalry is a great thing. Not only is it entertaining, but it also reminds each service that for a strong successful military, it takes every branch.

Even if the army only did police work, which is a highly inaccurate description, someone has to do that job. Every task, from the grunts to the janitors, plays an important and vital role for the operation, none less vital than the others. Without the "police work" the figters would have less order and more people to fight. Each person's job is important. Each person's sssignment is part of a larger plan.

Marines are insecure about thier role in the military. They realize that the Army is capable of performing thier mission and the need for water landings is shrinking with the capabilities of air transport. The Army has spearheaded nearly every major conflict in the last 20 years (Panama, Kosovo, Somalia, Gulf War, Afghanistan, Iraq) and the Marines are still trying holding on to their staged Iwa Jima picture as evidence of thier "grit."

Branches of the military always make fun of each other.
Marines are kind of like Baptists in that they believe they're the only "righteous" ones. But when their @sses get in a sling, who do they call for, the Army.
Edit: In Iraq, generally Army has some areas and Marines have others. The Army HAS to fight in it's areas just as the Marines do in theirs.

The services have been at odds with each other for years and sometimes there is even some arguing and fighting amongst each other like brothers in a family. Having grown up in the military and also belonged to it for thirty-four years I have seen it first hand but when you are deployed and sleeping with bugs, eating crap for food, and in a not-to-friendly place that all falls by the wayside and you all are one family. As for the Marines they instill this attitude in them at basic as well as a few others that can make them a pain in the *** but in a fight you will be glad they are on your side. To some extent they are also right in that one of their primary roles is that of tactical assault and so that is where that comes from. If you think they are hard on you just imagine what they say and think about some Air Force guy like me.

There is a friendly rivalry between the branches. Don't take it seriously. When the bullets are flying, the shell are bursting, we're all brothers and sisters working for one goal.
The Navy makes fun of the Marines, and vice versa and EVERYONE makes fun of the Air Farce (no, that's NOT a typo, I meant to spell it that way).

I wouldn't worry too much about it if I were you. The Marines did follow the 3rd ID into Iraq in 2003. Look it up. We both do our share of fighting, it's just friendly rivalry that leads to such talk.

Because they have a different job than you do. Their job is something they take pride in so of course nothing else is as good as theirs. Just the same as the army making fun of the navy or the air force...
