Does open general in the Air Force mean that they will give you a job at Basic or does that mean you get to pick at basic? I heard Open General=Security Forces or whatever they give to you! Can someone let me know, because if so Im going to freak out if I get Open General and have to security, i don't want to do it! I have already signed up as open general but I don't want to do it if its security forces! And also how is basic at Lackland? is it still 6 1/2 weeks? Im entering March 25th for open general, but unsure.. Let me know!

If you're open general, you're most likely going to get Security Forces.
I came in wanting it, but when I got to tech school, I hated it with every fiber of my being.
But, after tech school, when I got to my first base, I loved it.
Still do.

And if you're worried about deploying, keep in mind:
1.)Whatever job you get, you're most likely going to deploy at one time or another.
2.) You shouldn't be in the military. If you wanted to join the AF because you thought it'd be a free ride to a degree, you're wrong.

And Security Forces isn't that bad of a job.
We actually have a lot of fun.

When you enlist if it is not for a specific job or field they can put you into anything and that means first what they need most and what you might best be suited for. Since you seem to be career minded and wanting to eventually be commissioned I would try to stay in the medical fields and avoid those that carry a high degree of TDY and deployment like security forces or some of the flying type jobs. Continuing your education and eventually getting your degree and possibly a commission would be easier in the medical fields than any others right now since many of these jobs pay better on the outside and they tend to always need some of these people to replace those that are getting out who no longer want to stay in. I will also tell you that it is actually easier to go in as an officer with your degree already in hand than to do it like what you are proposing here. You may have to get out after your first enlistment finish up your schooling and then go back in as a commissioned officer. Many of these fields are changing dramatically due to resizing, outsourcing, and will continue to do so for some time to come.

Hi, I did four years in the military from 98-02. I will tell you this if you can help it DO NOT go in open general. A guaranteed job is the way to go. Because they have a written contract with you that they MUST give you the job you picked. OPEN

General means-they can give you WHATEVER they want.
Yes, they have a lot of jobs available. In my case when I went to MEPS I was shown a list of jobs and I picked 8 of those from the list.
My recruiter told me that I would get at least one of these 8 jobs. At the time I was interested in the medical field and I went in open general because I did not know any better.

During that time basic training was 6 weeks I believe now it is 8 or nine although I am not sure. Anyway, after I completed basic training-about one week away from graduating, they take us all in a room and start handing some of us envelopes and some of us papers with jobs on them. The instructor said he was handing us the information as to what our jobs would be. Which at that time I was not worried because I had picked what I wanted to do at meps.

That is when people began crying. They young lady next to me had exceled in basic and was a excellent at all the skills and they were making her...a cop or security forces...one girl they were making her a cook. They began crying because they said that these jobs were not one of the eight they had picked out at meps. And in my case was the same. But they had not already picked a job for me. I asked the instructor what was going on. Where were the jobs that I had picked at MEPS and you know what he said. He said the following: (I am not lying) He said yes those jobs you picked at meps WERE available at the time you picked them HOWEVER they have since become filled so more than likely they are going to make you an SP(Security forces) or put you were they need you. But in my case he told me a little secret that saved my life...and saved me from FOUR years of misery

BECAUSE when I finally got to my duty station I found out that being a cop was one of the WORST jobs you can have in ANY armed forces (unless of course you want to be it) Anyway, back to the secret..He says at MEPS you went through a variey of tests and one of the test is they have you to lift a bar to see how much weight you can lift and you lifted it above your head right? I said yeah, I did. He then asked me how much weight I lifted. I said 50pounds. He said, ok, now they are going to make you do the same test again to make sure you can do the same weight...HOWEVER this time when you do the test DO NOT lift more than 30 pounds BECAUSE if you do they will make you and SP because they are always in need of those.

So, upon hearing this news I put my plan into action. Keep in mind it was crazy there because everyone who had went in open general were getting screwed. Getting terrible jobs. So, when it came time for me to do my test.....I could barely lift 15 pounds...HA!! The Instructors yelled and screamed that I did it at MEPS why couldn't I do it now...blah blah blah. I did not budge! They then called me into an office and told me that since I did not qualify for any jobs on the list and could not lift the weight then there were going to offer me a different jobs.

They showed me a list of CUSHY office jobs and let me pick whatever I wanted. AND so I did! And spent the next 4 years wearing my dress blues and sitting in an airconditioned office. So that is my experience. I have found that medical and computer jobs pay good on the outside. MAKE sure you get your gi bill! 100.00 dollars a month may seem like a lot but it is well worth it. I am using mine now. I get 1,075 for school a month. It is well worth it. But do all you can to avoid being an SP at all costs!
