You go to school to learn. Whether you learn or not is up to you.
You have set tasks, or jobs, that both God and you chose before you were born. That is your destiny.
You are set, sent, placed, where those things will happen. The Devil's job is to trick you into not doing those things, make them difficult or impossible to do, or at the least get you to change your mind about doing them ( that is free will).
Your life is lived as the man in the middle trying to catch the ball being tossed overhead or just to the side of you, always as out of reach as possible. Catch the ball and you fufilled your destiny so on to the next round in the game called life.

I see it like this - If I want to be on the winning team, that's the one I chose. The "end" is pre-ordained. Your choice is not.
It's your "spirit/soul" in the balance - not your body or mind.
Satan is real happy to get you confused and then deceive you into believing anything but the truth and remember - There is only ONE truth and umpteen lies.
My suggestion is you don't get persuaded by "religion" which is manmade doctrine but search your soul for the answers and God judges with all knowledge no matter what religion you are.
It's man/society who judges you unworthy in an effort to control your behaviour/decision making.
Rest assured - on the day of judgement when all souls stand before Him, there's going to be an awful lot of unhappy confused and deceived souls. They can thank Satan for the deception and our society (which I see as "Satan personified") for their predicament.
I found it an awesome journey and very freeing when understood.
Keep searching friend and Don't be deceived.
A little side line to think about -
Human scientists told God they could now make a human being. God said "Great - show me." The scientist leaned over and picked up a handlefull of dirt. "Ungh. Ungh." said God. "You get your own dirt".
Enough said?

God does know the end from the beginning for each one of us....he knows what choices we will make, but it's still our choices. We are not "predestined" in the way you are thinking, that it takes away our choice. God knew you would be born, which parents would provide you with genes, he had plans for you that he knew would make you the happiest while here on this earth, but it is still up to you to decide what you want to do. God will never coerce you into anything. If you ask him to show you his plan for your life and help you to follow it, he will. But if at any time you want to go another direction, do your own thing, he won't stop you. He'll still be there to help you pick up the pieces when the life of your own choosing falls apart. He knows what's best for each one of us because he knows us so well, even before we are born. But if we think we know better, he doesn't interfere. He knows how it will turn out, and we don't.....that's why it's in our best interest to trust his plan for us.

You are given destiny when you become a follower . He did not set up your destiny long before you were born , but he did know you . You're friend is mis-interpreting that part of it . God has a plan for you , but first You just have to believe in him .

What you are missing is the difference between choice and consequence. Yes, you do have the choice to cross the street against the light, but the consequence of that could be fatal. It is still a choice though, you could choose to run faster.
