Luke 12:51
Suppose ye that I am come to give peace on earth? I tell you, Nay; but rather division: For from henceforth there shall be five in one house divided, three against two, and two against three. The father shall be divided against the son, and the son against the father; the mother against the daughter, and the daughter against the mother; the mother in law against her daughter in law, and the daughter in law against her mother in law.

He also said about how he wished it were already on fire. In another passage and I forgot to write it down. Does anyone know what that one means.

minnetta - you are so right. Now, this makes sense. When I started back in my Christian walk - if I wavered in my "kindness to all" or had a moment when I lost it and got angry my mom would be the first to jump all over me "and you call yourself a Christian." she would sneer. I felt like I was going to throw in the towel because I couldn't be perfect and I was trying so hard and I felt like my mom was my biggest critic waiting to pounce when I fell. Thanks everyone for the answers.

By Faith - yes, it is before this passage - I just happened to see this passage with out sentense 49 and remembered it was one of my questions I wanted to ask. Mine said: and how I wish it were already enkindled. So Jesus is talking about the Holy Spirit - but does that mean until the very end (up until tribulation?) Or does it mean just when it would start to descend upon the apostles? I was always perplexed with His zeal in this passage and what He is trying to say. Ok. It makes sense. Thanks.

The peaceful message proclaimed by Jesus and his followers appealed to some, those who had the right heart condition and desired to be reconciled to God. (Mt 10:13; Lu 10:5, 6; Ac 10:36) At the same time this message caused divisions in households, as some accepted it while others rejected it. (Mt 10:34; Lu 12:51) The majority of the Jews rejected the message and thus failed to discern “the things having to do with peace,” evidently including repentance and acceptance of Jesus as the Messiah. Their failure resulted in the destruction of Jerusalem by the Roman armies in 70 C.E.—Lu 19:42-44.
Jesus had been sent from heaven to “bear witness to the truth” that God’s Kingdom would rule in righteousness and make it possible for His will to be done on earth as in heaven. Following Jesus’ example in keeping Kingdom interests first is rarely easy and you have to have your priorities straight. So Jesus' comment that he “came to start a fire on the earth” and that there would be divisions in families over the Kingdom issue. What causes this division? It results from the way family members react to the good news of God’s kingdom. (Matt. 28:19, 20) Some accept that “good news,” while others reject it and perhaps even oppose it bitterly.

You are the house!
There are five that dwell within the house and they are Earth, Fire, Water, Air, & Ether. They try to destroy each other. These are the elements that God created man from!
Understand the five elements and your house will not be destroyed, because you have surrendered to God.
This is the parable that Jesus shared with mankind!
May we all be given the "Wisdom" to understand this beautiful parable!
*Your form, your body is made up of the 5 elements (Earth, Fire, Water, Air, and Ether. These five elements are constantly in conflict and are trying to destroy each other. We must learn of the relationship of the elements and there effect on each other, and gain control over them. Only then will the body (Our temporal home or abode) be at rest and allow a human to journey within and examine the universe within. The division within man must be understood, so man is not divided within and can gain an understanding of the true self.
The soul within man must be set free. This is what Jesus was hinting at in parable form within your question. Furthermore - "Jesus is the soul of man."
Communion with the soul is mans true goal. I hope this helps and further clarifies the statement that I made above...
*This helps man understand what it means to: "Be in the world and not of it." What belongs to the world, and what belongs to God! In truth the elements belong to the world!
"Peace be always with you."

Everyone He was talking to was a practicing Jew. The new covenant would do away with the law of Moses, which they were under. Some Jews would accept the gospel message and the new covenant, other would not. There would be sharp divisions among the Jews.

Earth, the world is the proving ground for what you believe in your heart. There are those that believe in reincarnation, there are those who do not. There are those who believe in Moses and there are some which do not. There are some who believe in every word spoken by the prophets and there are some that do not. Some believe in Mohammad, there are some who believe in Mary mother of Jesus. Each will fight for what and who they believe in.
Everyone in the world are all brothers, and sisters in spirit.

Luke 12:49
I am come to send fire on the earth; and what will I, if it be already kindled?
I believe he’s speaking of the Judgment Day the baptism by fire.

Christianity, done correctly, is a radical religion which takes people out of their comfort zone, and cases you to do things that don't make sense to the world.
If one person in the family wants to live a Christian lifestyle and the others don't it will cause division.

Take a look around Yahoo Answers in the religious posts. Exactly as Jesus said...division.
Jesus meant that every house would be divided in their beliefs...those who believe in Him and those who don't...take a look around...it's true now just as it was when he walked the earth...

In a household, some will become Christians and others not. And naturally this will cause divisions in the family.

Christ came into this world to establish peace between God and man, not between man and man, and to give the Gospel of spiritual and eternal peace to men. For those who hear and receive His Gospel there will be eternal peace.
