i will be an incoming freshman next fall (hopefully to the university of illinois at chicago)

i was wondering if possibly anyone knows anything about the academic departments of this school & which department i would be applying to... ( I dont want to enter nursing by the way... i would rather become a physician's assistant without going into pre-nursing first)

would i be applying to applied health sciences or liberal arts and sciences... OR WHAT?!? i'm so confused!

also- if anyone has any other additional info about becoming a physician assistant please feel free to share...

There are 130 accredited programs across the
country. In Illinois, there are four physician assistant
training programs. One is at an associate's degree
level and is offered at Malcolm X College in
Chicago. The others are at either the bachelor's or
master’s degree level. Most physician assistant
programs require applicants to have previous health
care experience and some college education. The
typical applicant already has a bachelor’s degree and
over four years of health care experience.
Commonly nurses, EMTs, and paramedics apply to
PA programs.

If you contact these schools they can tell you, individually, how to apply. Physician Assistant education in the US is currently confusing as there are associates degree programs from some schools, certificate programs for others (each requiring different prerequisites), bachelors degree and masters degree programs. Each of these programs will have it's own prerequisite courses as well as most will have some health care work or clinic experience requirements.

This is less controlled than physicians who either attend an MD or DO 4 year program after college, or nurse practitioners who all receive a masters degree after usually at least a 2 year education program after college. The national PA organizations are currently trying to create a single entry level for the PA profession. This problem is similar to the issue affecting RNs which currently has 3 entry levels to RN practice.

UIC does not have a physician's assistant program. Applied health sciences has only one freshman entry program: movement sciences. LAS is the largest college.
