eh...i'm in high school and i recently got my first job in an accountant's office. but the problem is, after three weeks of working there, i realized that i dont like it at all...i dread going to work everyday and i make so many mistakes that i think it would be better if i just quit. i only applied for the job because i needed the money, but what i REALLY want to do is work in retail! i realize that an office job is not for me. i want to work with customers and help people rather than sit at a desk all day filing papers.

my parents were so proud when i got the job, but i already told them i've been thinking about quitting. they told me to wait a little longer, but each time i go to work, i wish i had the courage to tell them i quit because the job is boring...

what should i do?? should i quit after 3 weeks because i dont like the job? need help from serious answerers who have had similar experiences!!

Holy smokes. I am an expert at this, I have a line of people to back me up on that. I would apply at other places in the mall or where ever it is you want to work. This time of year they'll call you fast (retail will). Once you have a job, put in a 2 week notice. Now, if the job is so untolerable and the people there are not good to you, I would find a job and probably only give 2 days to a 1 week notice. My father always said, "They wouldn't give you a 2 week notice if they planned on firing you." But I would only leave on a whim if you know for a fact that even with a 2 wk notice they would not give you a good reference.

Now, say you give the 2 week notice and plan to use them as a reference. State in a written notice and make a copy for yourself that "I regret to inform you , at this time, I have been offered a job in a field of interest to me and that I am planning to pursue."

Tell you what. You most likely will spend the majority of your life heading off to a job you don't like.

If it is truly the work that you don't like then you've discovered something very important about yourself.

So you take your parents' advice and give it another week or two. You're not going to die and this won't last for ever. After 2 weeks tell them you want to quit, and quit. Tell the folks that hired you that you don't think this is really the work for you. Thank them for the experience, and quit.

It would be helpful though if you lined up another job during these last two weeks. Shows a level or responsibility on your part.

Truthfully unless you are doing something extremely liberal no one is going to care what you did or didn't do with your jobs while you were in high school.

It's only been 3 weeks. It's good to know what you do and don't want to do, but it's going to take a while before you settle down and feel comfortable in any job.
Stick around, get good at what you do. Then quit if you still want to be in retail, knowing you can do any job you want, you can take anything on. You are stronger than this.
Take your time. Enjoy the cash. Pay your debts back for a few months, look for a job in retail.
Make this experience worth while. Learn something important. Stay, and if you still feel the same way in 3 months time, then leave. Give yourself time to settle down. Time passes so quickly. Give yourself some time, you have the rest of your life to be in retail.
Good luck.

Depends on the money, and how bad you want it! Trust me. My brother got me a job washing dishes at this fancy hotel he worked at when i was 16. I despised it so much, that i quit after only 3 days!!

And let me tell you, oh how i regret it. I could have had a steady job for the longest time and set my near-future up for some success. But, i was hard-headed and didn't know any better. Well, this time, i wasn't gonna let that happen AGAIN!!

Now i'm 21, contributing all that i have to offer, in the corporate world. I make good money for my age and am driving a real nice car.

Just listen to your folks....stick it out a little bit longer, then go from there.

hello there, if you are not happy at your job, you will not do a good job. but if you do not do a good job, you may be fired if you don't quit first. so you are between a rock and a hard place. if your job is boring, ask for something more to do, that would be better than quiting or getting fired. if you get fired, it can hurt your chance at another job opportunity . so you should try to stick it out a little longer and give the job a chance, besides, if it is boring it must be easy money or maybe your not working hard enough. good luck

i agree with yay, u have your whole life in retail, for my retail experience, when you're promoted to supervisor, you may need to do some paper work and accounting, if you have office experience then maybe you'll have a better chance of promotion than those who don't. stick around, it may also help you to know what are the things clerks and executives or management level people will buy, wear or use in the office, it will come in handy when recommending what to buy in the retail shop you work or want to choose.
