If a dog's quality of life has deteriorated to the point where he is in constant pain, his body systems are failing, and a slow, painful death is inevitable, having them put down is the most humane thing you can do. It is not an act of kindness to keep them around when they've gotten to that point. It's not an easy decision, but often it's the right one. I imagine it was in your case.

Feeling bad about it shows that you cared about him.
Animals do not sense death as we do, and are not self aware as we are. They sense suffering and pain, which you put a stop to. As a diabetic, he would have suffered more, and may have died quite a miserable death. Your decision was right, but it doesn't mean it was easy.

Yes. I had to put mine down a few years back. She was 15 and had kidney failure. She couldn't walk anymore. I felt really bad but in the long run, it was the kindest thing I could have done for her.
Sorry,
Hope

I think this poem will say it for you.

PUT ME TO REST

Time to let me go my friend,
Because my life no-one can mend,
Its better to let me go this way,
Than watch me suffer night and day.

I'm happy to go, my time has come,
My quality of life is no longer fun,
Ive been so ill, so its not a bad thing,
To let me go forever resting.

Stay with me till I drift away,
Fast asleep forever I pray,
To relieve me from suffering and pain,
What more can I ask from my best friend.

Don't be sad, I'll be free from pain,
Never to be ill ever again,
I know you'll miss me being there,
But all the memories you have to share.

Thankyou for being my best friend,
And all my needs that you did tend,
Try not to be sad, try not to cry,
Now's the time to say GOODBYE PUT ME TO REST

Of course it is. If you know he was suffering, there is nothing wrong with ending his misery. (we should have such compassion for people) I've had to do it 4 times and each time, I have felt guilt. It's normal. Please don't feel guilty any longer. Take peace in knowing that he was loved and you gave him a wonderful and happy life.

Yes, it's better to end it now, then end it in surprise later. I know it feels very cold, but it's the best thing for him/her if he/she is suffering.
