"Necessity is the mother of invention" means that if something is absolutely necessary, we don't stop striving until we have come up with a solution to the problem. Just as the crow figured out how to get water from the pitcher, we can solve our own problems if we are desperate enough.

I went on a camping trip once and discovered I'd left all my knives, forks, and spoons at home. I was about to eat with my fingers when I realized I was surrounded by bushes, and all I had to do was break off two short branches and make myself chopsticks. People who can't use chopsticks would have to think of something else, but if they were hungry enough, I'll bet they could!

It means that you can often "invent" something to accomplish a task that you really need done.

I was once in a situation where my partner and I were checking out an area where terrorist types often operated. Our task was to "convince" these people to abandon their evil path, one way or another. We rounded a corner and ran into more of them then I had bullets (my partner was unarmed). We were obviously doomed (the "necessity") until I rapidly hit upon a ruse (the "invention"). I used our two way radio to announce that "This is unit 7 of [our group name]. They have taken the bait. Units 4, 6, and 11 should close in immediately." They fled. I then ordered my driver/partner to leave. He wanted to stay to meet the others until I explained to him that we were the only ones in the area and that I had invented the other units. He was very upset that I would lie to terrorists in order to save our lives. I never allowed him near me on another mission.
