I do so out of respect, and it's not really "dressing up" it's just putting on skirt/dress for that 1-2 hour period.

Short answer, because we can. Now to make it a fashion statement and a I'm the best dressed attitude, that is not how I approach it. I am more from I'm going to fellowship with like minded people as we WORSHIP (to hold in honor, praise, revere, etc) GOD together. So, as I would if I were going to an 'earthly' function in honor of someone (wedding, funeral, baby shower, birthday, graduation, etc), I clean up and suit up, as the saying goes. Even if it just a clean pair of jeans and a nice shirt. I think it is wonderful that there is such a diversity in the way we dress.

I think it would be good as far as showing respect to both god and to make sure you don't offend other people attending by wearing something revealing. But aside from that I think people should not need to dress fancy with slacks and perfectly combed hair, if you have lip rings red hair and jeans and tshirt it should be fine just don't show half of your butt when you sit down or wear a tshirt that said Jesus=pwned or something ridiculous like that. I think thats kind of one thing that threw me into being a Deist myself, use to attend church and all but kept pressuring me into being this certain facade.

People dress up for the respectful manner of coming into Gods house...Many people argue with the saying "come as you are" , so to them they think it means to wear what ever you feel like wearing...But the true meaning is to come the best way you can

Why do most dress in shorts and flip flops is what you mean. Most look like they didn't take a shower or comb their hair.

I dress in a suit and tie when I go because I am going to worship my God and Creator. It is part of giving out best to God.

well for some people going to church is a fashion show. they don't go to serve the Lord, but to socialize, and see what everyone else is wearing.

My auntie took me to church occasionally as a teenager. My granny who belonged to a different church was appalled that they let in kids with dyed cherry red hair, denim jeans and pierced lips.
I respected them more for not caring what I wore.
I am agnostic and rarely go to church, but I find it easier to respect a faith that does not hinge on outward appearances.

I wonder what the ladies in the choir have on underneath those gowns. Some of them look pretty hot. Bet they're wearing thongs and no bra.
