Either one would be a good choice. Canon makes on of the best cameras around. Great durability and amazing image quality. Here are two links to a site that shows photo's from everyday people with the camera

The extra megapixels are nice when you crop or blow up your photo's. If you arn't going to make any photo's larger than 8.5x11 the difference in megapixels arn't going to make a huge difference.

However are you sold on these two cameras? Nikon makes a camera called the D40x. This is a great camera for first time DSLR users. It is what I started with about a year ago and have since declared photo as my major and moved up to the D300. What makes the d40x so nice is it includes two very helpful features for those new to DSLR's. The first is the "?" button. What this button does is when hit it describes in plain english whatever setting you have highlighted. Second is that for some of the more commonly used setting there are little pictures stored in the camera that demonstrate what the setting is ideal for. For example ISO 400 has a picture of a racing sea-doo to show this may be ideal for outdoor action shots.

Just because it is aimed at the first time DSLR users doesn't mean its any "worse" of a camera. It still takes phenomenal photo's and offers just as many "pro" settings as the cannon. Hope this was helpful and no matter which of the three camera's you go with your gunna get some great shots and have lots of fun. Good Luck!

In my opinion you should get the Rebel XTi since it has 10.1 MP vs the 8 MP of the Rebel XT.

CDH is right, you will get much more detail in your photos with the 10.1 megapixel that you would with the 8.
