I'm not that pretty, but at the same time, I want to at least try my luck with semi-attractive men.
I see someone smiling and looking happy, and I try and go up, but I don't know what to say...I'm so scared that I would be really brutally rejected. I can handle it, but I would like to avoid it! What type of body-language should I look for if the guy would never give me chance?
This will sound silly: how do I actually initiate a conversation with a guy? I usually freeze and in the tradition of Bridget Jones, spout nervous jumble.

I'm not that bad looking and i want to be at least marginally attracted to the guy: http://i225.photobucket.com/albums/dd287/anagavalda109/Photo4.jpg

hehe...I usually have something funny or interesting to say in my head, but all my smarts fly out of the window because of my anxiety...and no...never slutty...that's immature!

and no, i'm not a beauty to many, many men...just OK and Hermione Granger-like in the sense that I have a habit of being a text-book.

Give me a prompt and I'll give you an analysis or commentary! If I get the chance and he isn't staring coldly at me, then I would give it all I can!

hey there is nothing wrong with initiating a conversation. Please don't think about it as rejection. If that person isn't interested in having a conversation with a wonderful person? It would be their loss.
Go head approach him and say hi. **** I love it when a woman does that to me. I make sure that she know that I have a girlfriend so there is no miss understanding.

Damn!
I agree with jamiefay...

I won't deny it, I do have high standards, but...

If you could keep an intelligent conversation going for more than 10 minutes, I'd give you 10 chances :)

Maybe you've just been focusing on the wrong type of guy, looking in the wrong places.

Also, think of activities and somesuch that you enjoy doing and go scouting for guys who do the same, there's your starting point for conversation.

Oh, and keep flashing that winning smile :)

If you got a good personality then you can get a good looking guy. Just don't turn slutty to get a guy. That is a big mistake that a lot of girls make.

I would be flattered to have you just come up and introduce yourself. By the way yes you would have my full attention, you are attractive and would get my attention even if you walked by. To answer your question clearly any girl that came up to me and introduced herself or just started talking to me, it could be as simple as asking my name, would get me interested to know if it is someone I would want to be with in a relation. You have a very good chance! If you did not start talking to me, we might not even meet. If the guy does not get nervous and freeze he will help you as he does not want to blow it. I have been approached by more girls than I have approached and I like it and it is a plus as far as I am concerned.

Your perspective is skewed...you are not marginally attractive; in fact you happen to be quite pretty. But that fact alone is NOT going to get you past your socialization difficulties. Try harder to see yourself more kindly.
