My daughters remote control to her tv started to smoke when she was using it this morning. She said she could hardly hold it in her hand it was so bad. She finally managed to throw it outside. Scary to say the least. Does anyone know what would cause this?

Oh I forgot to say that they were pretty new batteries.

Maybe she reversed the batteries. Maybe some of the batteries are in parallel with each other and when reversed basically went into a state where full current was drawn from them and they heated up. Other than that she has a defective remote which shorted and that is rare but always possible if even for just a few in a million otherwise good remotes. Could also be something was spilled on the remote and shorted it out.
