How hard is it to get a job as a Police Officer? Would applying with an associates degree in Criminal Justice versus just 12 credits towards it make that big of a difference?

It isn't easy, but neither is it impossible.

Being hired as a police officer is a competitive process, you have to be the best qualified candidate for a given position out of all the applicants for a given position to get hired. Obviously, having more education is better than less.

It's different from city to city and state to state. You'll have to research the department you are interested in applying with.

Having a degree is a huge plus not only in helping you get the job but potentially sets you up for a higher pay rate. Focusing your education on criminal justice is not a must, but it will really help you in understanding the mind set of law enforcement as well as giving you a step up if you are hired and sent to the Police Academy. Many of the classes are similar to what you'll face when going through the Academy. Obviously at a lower level, but a help none the less.

It's definately not easy, but it's well worth it. Good luck to you!

The minimum requirements are usually established by state law, so it would depend where you applied.

Most agencies now require an associates degree, some a bachelors. Even if you do not need the degree, it is a good idea to have one. Most of your coworkers will have them, so you will need one to be competitive for promotions and special assignments.

How hard can it be? Look at some of the idiots who are cops? If you can't be a municipal officer, then look at departments with lower standards, like college, transit, housing authority or other cops. Any idiot can be a cop. Most of them are.

In my state all you need is to be 21 and have a high school diploma to earn a starting pay in the $50s doing nothing but writing reports and tickets all day.
