My husband called me from his training base where he is receiving Infantry Training. I love to hear from him and afterwards my morale goes up 1000%!! Most of our conversation was about family and the expression of our own special feelings of love for each other. Nevertheless, I'm a very logical person (I'm a Math major in community college but will drop that to go and be with him together with our sweet little darling soon to be born. Anyway my logical side started questioning him about his training and what sort of weapons and tactics he's been learning. Sometimes I get into a mode of speaking that borders on interrogation (lol lol). Anyway he told me that OPSEC (operational security) prevents him from discussing those things even with his loving wife (lol lol). Ok, we developed the Atom Bomb and the Soviet Government stole the technology from us. Gunpowder and guns replaced spears. The ability to work and process metal ore developed into weapons used in ALL armies.

There seems to be 2 schools of thought - 'Low Tech' vs 'high-tech'. the Soviets went low tech, building lots and lots of cheap and nasty and simple weapons systems. The West went high-tech and built fewer, better systems. In every conflict I can think of where eastern technology was pitted against western technology since Korea, the western high-tech has won out. Look at the Israeli's racking up mammoth kill ratios with their American aircraft against Arabs flying Soviet aircraft. The war record of the Abrams tanks against ex-Russian T-72's in Iraq. It seems that Quality overcomes Quantity.

Good answers above me. One more point is that it was German scientists developed the Atomic Bomb at the Uni. of Chicago. We took them to the U.S. The Russians also took German scientists to develop the atomic bomb. It was really a race. Ours was called the Manhattan Project. I live in Chicago and I also was in Security in the Military. Can you imagine if those German Scientists were not taken by us and the Russians in time so that Hitler would have had the bomb? Oh, and your husband is right. Don't bug him..lol

Just because someone becomes aware of a weapon, or even what it takes to produce it, does not mean they have the ability to actually produce it. How many countries have stealth aircraft? Nukes? ICBMs?

Your question assumes that no one else is working on researching weaponry.

What's worse, having the technology first, then others stealing from you, or not having the technology while others do?

No... we still need to develop better systems.... if only for defense.. you are incorrectly assuming that any enemy wouldn't or don't develop systems of their own.
