There isn't much of a difference, it's more about semantics. Most agnostics don't believe in any supernatural deities, just like atheists, but there a few that are afraid to be labeled as atheists, so they try to claim there is more of a difference. Atheists lack a belief in supernatural deities. If an agnostic doesn't, then they actually believe in a supernatural deity and are a theist, not agnostic.

atheism is a-theos in Greek: non-theim; ergo the belief in no God. Agnosticism, a-gnosis in Greek: means without knowledge or unsure as to the reality of a god or not. Atheism rejects the supernatural outright, and agnosticism leaves it open saying it can neither prove or disprove.

Agnosticism:The belief that nothing is or can be known about the existence or nonexistence of god

Atheism:The belief that God does not exist.

Everyone, if truly and intellectually honest with themselves must be agnostic, as it is ultimately impossible to know one way or other. However, agnostics are intellectual fence sitters.

EDIT: Too many people here are confusing agnosticism with deism. Get it right!

Atheism seems to attract the most homosexuals since they think theres no god because they're gay and they cant accept it and agnosticism is more of a choice that people make cause they dont really know if theres a god or not but they arent mad and they dont say theres definately no god like gay atheists do, agnosticism doesnt really have anything to do with homosexuality. Me and my boyfriend have study both beliefs and its peoples so i think we both know what we're talking about

Don't feel ignorant, MOST people get this wrong. A = (negative) gnostic = knowing.

It doesn't mean THEY don't know.....Agnostic does NOT mean undecided, it means a person who says it is impossible to know.

Atheist means a person who says there is no God (of any sort). A= (negative) theism = pertaining to deities.

Athiest's believe there is no God. Agnostics dont believe anyone can know there is a God.

Problem is by eliminating the possibility that one can learn that there is a God, they've already made sure that they wont ever know.

If you dont believe you can know and understand calculus, chances are you wont ever even try.

That isn't an ignorant question, it is a valid one. Atheists don't believe in gods. Agnostics sit on the fence.

Agnosticism is a claim about knowledge: "It is not possible to determine whether or not a God exists."

Atheism is a claim about the existence of deities: "There are no gods."

One can be both, one only, or neither.

Atheists never bathe. And the only time they shower is when it rains. If there were a god, I'd pray down-wind. Whereas agnostics are undecided.
