Can I become a police oficer if I was fired from a job for giving away merchandise. Had the money taken out my final check to cover the loss, and was never formally charged.

This happened in November of 2003.

I know it was dumb thing to do, but at the time I was under stress from going through a divorce, working and going to school full time, mad at the world and the store at the time.

I knew it was dumb and there was no justification, but since then I've changed my life around completely.

The statute of limitations may not apply here.

You may not have been charged, but it will come up on your background check when they contact that employer. It might keep you from getting the job, depending on the department.

Only way to know for sure is to apply...

It will probably come up during your police background investigation. You need to disclose it on your application.

It's not the statute of limitations that you need to worry about...they're not going to charge something that's already been worked out between the two parties years before.

Depending on the amounts, embezzlement is (See New Mexico Statute 30-16-8):

A petty misdemeanor ($250 or less) - 1 year statute of limitations
A misdemeanor ($250.01 - $500) - 2 year statute of limitations
4th degree felony ($500.01 - $2500) - 5 year statute of limitations
3rd degree felony ($2500.01 - $20000) - 5 year statute of limitations
2nd degree felony (over $20000) - 6 yr statute of limitations

If you were never formally charged.. then no, it shouldn't be a problem. I doubt it would turn up on any kind of background check..

good luck, and please don't become an a**hole cop! we want good cops!

but fyi... that company totally could have sent you to jail for that. I hope you learned from that mistake!

You would make for a very typical cop- taking advantage of your position for personal gain.
