There are plenty of other non-kosher animals. Basically its in the OT law and the Quran. Why? Some animals were dangerous to eat in ancient times. Others were symbolic of vice.

Throughout the Old Testament there are numerous references to not just pigs, but all forms of animals, birds, and water life that cannot be eaten. Such as pigs, dogs, cats, rats, lizards, buzzards, lobster, crab, etc. Basically, these creatures are all cleaners of the earth and waters. Like pathogens they love dead or dying materials, from feces, to flesh, to rotting plants, and many will even eat the flesh of their own kind. I have witnessed this in pigs and lobsters, and watched a dog lap up the blood of another dog that had been hit by a truck the day before. They are unclean, and so are not to be eaten unless you too want to be unclean. There's good reason for this rule. Many diseases, mental and physical issues, and long term poor health can all be attributed to eating unclean animals, whether it's well cooked or not.

Here is the only correct answer you will get on this ongoing confusing subject. The reason God didn't want humans to eat pig products was for disease prevention purposes in the modern human He created and had nothing to do with the pig being evil. The pig being evil is a misinterpretation by mankind of understanding this law based on Yahweh's scientific knowledge. The pig was only one of many equally unhealthy animals for humans to eat as food. God classifies all land animals with a simple stomach digestive system which He describes as animals that don't chew their cud. Which the pig falls into this classification. He then is telling us that all land animals that fall into the classification of having a four chambered stomach or chew their cud and also have even split hooves,( ruminants) as healthy animals for humans to eat as a food product. So it was mankind that singled the pig out as being the worst not God.

I don't know about muslims, but jews don't eat pork because the old testament says so.
There was a time when porks spread diseases, so (same as the circumsicion) the rule was just established to protect the people.
Then it just remained like that, even when there are no REAL reasons not to eat pork OR to get circumcised nowadays.

firstly, they aren't singled out. there are many "unclean" animals, including, I think all carnivores.
in the old testament theres a specific section that enumerates qualitys animals have to have to be "clean" and edible for us.

you do realize that biologically pork is an absolutely filthy meat, even now theres some diseases it can carry that can survive cooking! back then it was practically russian roulette to eat pork, it was just a bad thing all around.

its a pretty modern thing that pigs are safe to eat... with cleaner farming methods, and refrigeration it makes it so that its not borderline suicide.

and theres a joke I heard...

a priest and a rabbi talk about when they chose to join the clergy, and the priest said that before he did he made sure to have sex first, just so he'd know.
and the rabbi said that he had a similar experience, that before he became a rabbi, he went out and had a big pork dinner.
then he looked to the priest and said "sex is alot better huh?"

heres a link for more info.

1. it's Allah's command not to touch the flesh of the swine.

2. It's a flithy animals. Look for yourself at the living habits of the pig.

3. There's this kind of microscopic worms in the flesh of the swine that is unkillable, either by roasting it or boiling it or anyways you may try. That worm, that is causing the JE epidemic sometime ago.

If you don't belive this, try an acid test to this experiment. take a flesh of swine and pour some coca cola,"Coke" and watch the wiglling things that came out of it. That "thing" is unkillable. and it will reside in your body for eternity if you have it in your diet. And it is harmful to your health.

The fact that consumption of pork is prohibited in Islam is well known. The following points explain various aspects of this prohibition:

1. Pork prohibited in Qur’an

The Qur’an prohibits the consumption of pork in no less than 4 different places. It is prohibited in 2:173, 5:3, 6:145 and 16:115.

"Forbidden to you (for food) are: dead meat, blood, the flesh of swine, and that on which hath been invoked the name of other than Allah." [Al-Qur’an 5:3]

The above verses of the Holy Qur’an are sufficient to satisfy a Muslim as to why pork is forbidden.

2. Pork prohibited in the Bible

The Christian is likely to be convinced by his religious scriptures. The Bible prohibits the consumption of pork, in the book of Leviticus

"And the swine, though he divide the hoof, and be cloven footed, yet he cheweth not the cud; he is unclean to you".

"Of their flesh shall ye not eat, and their carcass shall ye not touch, they are unclean to you."
[Leviticus 11:7-8]

Pork is also prohibited in the Bible in the book of Deuteronomy

"And the swine, because it divideth the hoof, yet cheweth not the cud, it is unclean unto you. Ye shall not eat of their flesh, nor touch their dead carcass."
[Deuteronomy 14:8]

A similar prohibition is repeated in the Bible in the book of Isaiah chapter 65 verse 2-5.

3. Consumption of pork causes several diseases

The other non-Muslims and atheists will agree only if convinced through reason, logic and science. Eating of pork can cause no less than seventy different types of diseases. A person can have various helminthes like roundworm, pinworm, hookworm, etc. One of the most dangerous is Taenia Solium, which is in lay man’s terminology called tapeworm. It harbours in the intestine and is very long. Its ova i.e. eggs, enter the blood stream and can reach almost all the organs of the body. If it enters the brain it can cause memory loss. If it enters the heart it can cause heart attack, if it enters the eye it can cause blindness, if it enters the liver it can cause liver damage. It can damage almost all the organs of the body.

Another dangerous helminthes is Trichura Tichurasis. A common misconception about pork is that if it is cooked well, these ova die. In a research project undertaken in America, it was found that out of twenty-four people suffering from Trichura Tichurasis, twenty two had cooked the pork very well. This indicates that the ova present in the pork do not die under normal cooking temperature.

4. Pork has fat building material

Pork has very little muscle building material and contains excess of fat. This fat gets deposited in the vessels and can cause hypertension and heart attack. It is not surprising that over 50% of Americans suffer from hypertension.

5. Pig is one of the filthiest animals on earth

The pig is one of the filthiest animals on earth. It lives and thrives on muck, faeces and dirt. It is the best scavenger that I know that God has produced. In the villages they don’t have modern toilets and the villagers excrete in the open air. Very often excreta is cleared by pigs.

Some may argue that in advanced countries like Australia, pigs are bred in very clean and hygienic conditions. Even in these hygienic conditions the pigs are kept together in sties. No matter how hard you try to keep them clean they are filthy by nature. They eat and enjoy their own as well as their neighbour’s excreta.

6. Pig is the most shameless animal

The pig is the most shameless animal on the face of the earth. It is the only animal that invites its friends to have sex with its mate. In America, most people consume pork. Many times after dance parties, they have swapping of wives; i.e. many say "you sleep with my wife and I will sleep with your wife." If you eat pigs then you behave like pigs.

Trichinosis. It is a parasite that can infect pigs and also humans that eat undercooked pork. At one time there was a valid heath reason. Trichinosis is relatively rare in pork today.
