My friend wants to revert to Islam alhamdullah :-))
But she has small problem with her name... Her family name (surname) is one that is unsuitible for Muslims...
I know that if you have name with bad meaning that you must change it, but also that you must keep your original family name (because it is connection with who you are)
Also her reversion is big shock to her family. She doesn't want to alienate them further by changing her name. And she is under 18 anyway, so can't do it legally without her father's permission anyway.
What should she do??

Ohhh she is Greek like me! Actually her last name means Christ which means annointed one. Many people were annointed ones so i don't actually think it will be bad to keep it. It does not mean Christian, it only means Christ. Christian in Greek would be Kristianos.
edit: If you don't believe me check this out from wikipedia: In the 1st century, Jews interpreted the prophecies of the Tanakh to refer more specifically to someone appointed by God to lead the Jewish people in the face of their tribulations with the Romans. Christians believe that these prophecies referred to a spiritual savior, and consider Jesus to be that messiah. The word Christ (Greek Χριστός, Christos, "the anointed one") is a literal translation of "mashiah" used in the Greek Septuagint version of the Bible, and derived from the Greek verb χριω "rub, anoint with scented unguents or oil, as was done after bathing," "anoint in token of consecration." [1]
In Islam, Jesus (Isa) is also called the Masih.[2]

Asalam Alaykum,
She should go ahead and pick what name she would like for herself. She should have people (Muslims) to go ahead and start calling her that and also tell new people she meets this is her name. Then when she turns 18 she should legally change it into that name. And yes your right in Islam all reverts with a bad name should change it.

MashaAllah for the conversion, as for the name: in these cases the surnames usually change from the original to xy Abdullah or Abdul or xy bint ul Islam because they are nice names for converts (it is a custom for example in malaysia etc)

Ma'asha Allah, you must be really proud, all of us Muslims alike... no need to worry about changing her name now, she should concentrate on strengthening her ties with Islam and Insha Allah, Allah Ta'ala will assist her all the way...shukriya my friend for being concerned about her...!

She should leave it. She need not do it since she is young, and it would be detrimental to her family unity. She should begin to call herself whatever Muslim name she decides for herself, yet keep her legal name as Kristos.

Perhaps she should tell other people to call her by a new name, if she cant change her name legally. For example, she can introduce herself as Ameena (or w/e name she likes) instead of *insert bad name here* to other ppl. and eventually maybe she can officially change her name...also, friends like you can call her by her new name!! =)
is it ok if i ask what her name is right now?
John - what if a person was named Satan or sumthing? u dont think that MIGHT be inappropriate, for ANY religion?

she should get her parents permission. If they do not grant it, she should just wait till 18 to change it. At least she will be a muslim.
congratuations to her, btw!...please help her cope with whtever hardships she may face with her family.

You do see the irony of this question coming from "Athena" right?
As others have said, she can use an assumed name for now and change it later if she is able.

She should ask her parents and InshaAllah they will let change her name but in the event that they do not, she should go ahead and change it for the sake of Allah. But tell her parents that she is not being disrespectful but she did what she had to do...
