Yup, general consensus is feed it alcohol! Brandy, rum, skewer it and trickle in spoonfuls....yum yum!! If you are going to ice it, be generous with the sieved apricot jam to make the marzipan stick, then ice as usual

I'm not sure what to do after the fact, but next time, wrap the sides of the pan in strips of a damp towel (don't use one you like!). Use a safety pin to keep it on. I'm not sure why this works, but the edges don't burn, and the cake remains a lot more level than without. You won't have to cut off as much.

After feeding it a nice amount of alcohol periodically, when it comes to icing just trim the edges with a sharp knive. You could also put the base of the cake on the top so you have a nice flat even base for decorating.

Wrap it in several layers of paper towel dampened with water, rum, brandy, sherry, rose wine, whatever! Put it in airtight container, tin or cake taker. Turn it every day and reseal. In a few days it will no longer be crispy on the edges or top.

I think the best thing you can do is to cut off the crisper bits using a knife. There isn't really much you can do now that you have cooked it but maybe you should try the crispy bits...it sounds kinda nice to me! Enjoy your cake...I'm making mine tomorrow yay :)

Put about 1 tsp of extra milk for every cup of mix you have. Also, try heating it for a shorter span of time.

yes, my mother taught me to put the cake in the cake holder and then put a fresh piece of bread in it. the moisture from the bread will dissolve into your cake and believe me it will be fresh and soft by the time it's time to eat it.

wrap it in a clean damp (not wet) tea towel overnight. Two tea towels if it's particularly crispy (they may dry out a bit if you leave your central heating on).
