Here is our basic beliefs
Here are the 13 "Articles of Faith" that Joseph Smith wrote back to Charles Wentworth when he was asked the same question.
1 We believe in God, the Eternal Father, and in His Son, Jesus Christ, and in the dHoly Ghost.
2 We believe that men will be punished for their own sins, and not for Adam’s transgression.
3 We believe that through the Atonement of Christ, all mankind may be saved, by obedience to the laws and ordinances of the Gospel.
4 We believe that the first principles and ordinances of the Gospel are: first, Faith in the Lord Jesus Christ; second, Repentance; third, Baptism by immersion for the remission of sins; fourth, Laying on of hands for the gift of the Holy Ghost.
5 We believe that a man must be called of God, by prophecy, and by the laying on of hands by those who are in authority, to preach the Gospel and administer in the ordinances thereof.
6 We believe in the same organization that existed in the Primitive Church, namely, apostles, prophets, pastors, teachers, evangelists, and so forth.
7 We believe in the gift of btongues, prophecy, revelation, visions, healing, interpretation of tongues, and so forth.
8 We believe the Bible to be the word of God as far as it is translated correctly; we also believe the Book of Mormon to be the word of God.
9 We believe all that God has revealed, all that He does now reveal, and we believe that He will yet reveal many great and important things pertaining to the Kingdom of God.
10 We believe in the literal gathering of Israel and in the restoration of the Ten Tribes; that Zion (the New Jerusalem) will be built upon the American continent; that Christ will reign personally upon the earth; and, that the earth will be renewed and receive its paradisiacal glory.
11 We claim the privilege of worshiping Almighty God according to the dictates of our own conscience, and allow all men the same privilege, let them worship how, where, or what they may.
12 We believe in being subject to kings, presidents, rulers, and magistrates, in obeying, honoring, and sustaining the law.
13 We believe in being honest, true, chaste, benevolent, virtuous, and in doing good to all men; indeed, we may say that we follow the admonition of Paul—We believe all things, we hope all things, we have endured many things, and hope to be able to endure all things. If there is anything virtuous, lovely, or of good report or praiseworthy, we seek after these things.

Go to www.Mormon.Org That will give you the best, most accurate information about what we believe. It is a site set up for people who are interested in our beliefs and it has our basic beliefs- there is a feature that allows you to chat with church members if you have any questions.
The most major thing that sets us apart from Catholics and other Christian faiths is that we don't believe the Trinity Doctrine. We believe that God the Father, Jesus Christ and the Holy Ghost are three distinct and separate beings, united in purpose. We also believe in Continuing revelation from God. We don't believe that the heavens are closed. We believe that every person is entitled to our own personal revelation.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormonism) is a beautiful Christian religion. You should be extremely careful when trying to learn about Mormons from others. There are many who hate the Mormons and spread lies, distortions, and conspiracy theories about them. Others think they understand Mormon doctrine because of "what they've heard," but are actually misinformed.
Because Mormons are Christian, we believe in most of the things that Christians believe, including:
1) Christ is divine and salvation comes only through Him.
2) The Bible is the word of God.
3) Men ought to love one another.
Mormons are a unique branch of Christianity, however. We are neither Catholic nor Protestant, so naturally we have some different beliefs. Most of the differences are minor. One significant difference has to do with the authority to act in God's name. Mormons believe that soon after the death of Christ and His apostles, the early Christian Church was greatly influenced by Greek and Roman philosophies and political pressures. Despite the efforts of many good men and women, the true Church of Christ was eventually lost because of these outside pressures and internal, man-made changes. Mormons believe that God reestablished the original Church of Christ in 1820 through a man named Joseph Smith.

The best place to go is http://www.LDS.org for our beliefs. In this forum I have seen the most ridicuous stuff said by non-members. Some makes me laugh aloud it's so silly.
Basically we believe in the Bible, so that obviously means we believe that Jesus Christ is our Savior. We also have the Book of Mormon which we believe goes hand in hand with the Bible, and are accounts of Jesus visiting the Americas.

Why don't you go into one of the Mormon web sites, and I am sure that you will find what their beliefs are.
One thing they believe, that others don't is that Jesus visited South America and taught the same message there that he did in Jerusalem.
I am not a Mormon, But after reading the book of Mormon, I believe that he DID visit other part of the world.

Here is a good site to go to for what we believe: www.mormon.org (http://mormon.org/mormonorg/eng/).
In short, we believe that God loves all of his people equally and that he has called living prophets in today's day. He restored the fullness of His gospel through Joseph Smith (The first prophet of this time). We believe that the gospel was lost after the apostles and early church members were persecuted and killed for their beliefs.
We believe that Christ is our Savior and that He died, so that we can all be resurrected. We also believe that He suffered for our sins, so that we can be forgiven of them if we have faith in Him.
We also believe that each individual can receive revelation through the Holy Ghost and that God answers every one of our prayers.
We also believe that we lived with God before we came to earth and that we are His spirit children. We believe that we were sent to this earth to receive bodies and to learn and to grow through opposition. After this life, we will for a time dwell as spirits only. During this time those who did not get a chance to receive God's truth will be given a chance to receive it. After this time, we believe we will be judged and resurrected and that all people will be given a degree of glory according to their faith and obedience to God's commandments. We believe that the highest degree of glory is life with our Heavenly Father and that we will progress eternally with those who we loved on earth.
If you have more questions, feel free to email me, and I especially recommend looking around the site to learn more as it was produced by the LDS church to explain our basic beliefs to those who are interested.
I know my post is already long, but I failed to address the later part of your question. We believe, as it says in the Bible, that God is the Father and that He has a glorified body of flesh and (as we are created in His image) and that Christ is His Son who also has a body (which He must have since He was resurrected) and that the Holy Ghost is the third member of the Godhead who is a spirit that can dwell in us to manifest the truth unto us. This differs from the view of the trinity which the Catholic church established.
As said above, we do believe that Christ visited America and perhaps other places after his resurrection. This fulfills the scripture where He says that He is going to visit His sheep which are of another fold.

we believe there are more "ceremonies" that are necessary than just baptism. and from what I have read on this forum others don't believe baptism is necessary for salvation. It is so necessary that Jesus himself was baptised.

Mormons believe completely differently to most religions. They for starters do not believe in Jesus of the bible. There Jesus is a brother of the devil. They believe Joseph Smith is more important then Jesus Christ to them and this Joesph smith was into the occult. Therefore they have many masonic symbols on their temples. Alwas a very funny one is they need to wear special underwear. From what I understand about them they are a dangerous Cult

Mormonism is critically contrary to Scripture, but they are such because like Catholicism, they assume apostolic authority over all others and even the Bible itself, and equate another source of supposed Divine revelation with Scripture.
But the authenticity of a true church or believer is not based upon ecclesiastical or physical lineage, but like that of a true Jews, it is based upon effectual faith in the gospel of grace, which both Mormonism and Rome effectively, officially and effectually, deny. Most critically in that they foster faith in one's own merits and the powers of the church for salvation, rather than solely in Christ and His sinless shed blood, as the Bibliocal church taught and realized. Hence according to Mormonism, and classic Catholicism, if you formally leave theri church, you are damned. Yet to be truly saved requires separation from their unBibical errors.
Here are just a few differences as regards Mormonism:
"God himself was once as we are now, and is an exalted man, and sits enthroned in yonder heavens." - Joseph Smith
"We have clearly shown that God the Father had a plurality of wives, one or more being in eternity, by whom He begat our spirits as well as the spirit of Jesus His first Born, and another being upon the earth by whom He begat the tabernacle of Jesus (Mary - ed.), as his only begotten in the world. We have also probed most clearly that the Son followed the example of his Father, and became the great Bridegroom to whom kings' daughters and many honorable wives were to be married. We have also proved that both God the Father and our Lord Jesus Christ inherit their wives in eternity as well as in time . . . LDS Apostle Orson Pratt, The Seer, p. 172.
But the Bible teaches God always was God (Ps. 9:2), and a spirit (Jn. 4:24), and that in the afterlife people are not married
(Psa 90:2) "Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever thou hadst formed the earth and the world, even from everlasting to everlasting, thou art God."
(John 4:24) "God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth."
(Mat 22:30) "For in the resurrection they neither marry, nor are given in marriage, but are as the angels of God in heaven."
