My daughters 5th grade teacher is awesome! Should I give her a 25 or 50 gift card? What is appropriate? We live in the NYC area.

As a teacher myself, yes anything is always appreciated. I would personally give the $25 with some baked goods, homemade or from a great NYC bakery. The $50 would feel like a bribe whether or not your child is doing well in the class.

Just the $25 would be fine too, but the baked goods really lend the personal touch. It says how much you appreciate them without going over the top cash-wise. And the extra bit of appreciations is probably why you're considering the $50 in the first place.

The only way I think $50 wouldn't be over the top would be dependent on where the gift card is to. If you're giving a gift card to a spa or an expensive restaurant where the bill is going to end up being like $75-100, then the $50 is perfectly fine. Because if you give $25 to a place that's going to force them to spend $50-75 out of their own pocket, then it's like giving them nothing at all. Most likely they won't use the $25 because they won't want to spend that much of their tiny salary on a luxury like that.

I'm sure whatever you decide will be great.

Merry Christmas!

If you know your daughter's teacher's personal interest, buy a specific gift card to a place she loves. If not, purchase a gift certificate/visa card so she can use it anywhere she needs services or goods. It does not matter what the denomination of the gift card if it is for her. If you believe her to be awesome for your child by all means give $50. If you want to spearhead a collection for one large certificate from the class that is spectacular. Keep in mind that If the gift card is to a place that she could purchase "teaching" things, it is not always viewed as a gift. Teachers are dedicated! They will often spend the certificate on the classroom. However, they love to be acknowledge on a personal level so spend some time talking with your child about the teacher's use of free time. Good luck!

My best friend is an elementary school teacher and she says that the best gift a teacher could possibly get are school supplies - or a gift card to a store where school supplies can be purchased. You may not know exactly what he needs, so a gift card should be the best way to go. I never knew that most teachers foot the bill for their supplies for their students. It's nice when parents can help out a bit. He'll love it.

Yes! Teachers can recieve gifts. I am a teacher and trust me! It really is the thought that counts around the holidays. If you know they are a coffee lover even a $5 gift card to starbucks is appricated, or anything you know they are interested in. Gifts vary depending on where you live and your students of course but give only what you feel you can give. There really is no expected gift. This is one of those times when its the thought that counts. My favorite gifts were always the ones the kids made. A really cute card or picture from a child can brighten our days. I had a student make an ornament for me... to this day it still hangs on my tree!

oh wow! I'm glad you think your daughter's teacher is great, but most people would still only give around 20 dollars (or less). If you are quite determined, then a 25 gift card would be more appropriate than a 50.

Hi!
I'm a substitute and a mom. My kids are giving $10 gift cards from a bookstore with a little box of candy to their teachers. The teachers really appreciate any recognition. I feel teachers do think it's the thought that counts. All the teachers at my schools are so sweet and kind. Take care for the holidays!

You may want to check with your local school system. I know where I live the teachers are only allowed to accept gifts with a value under $5.00. Each state, town, and school system is different. If there is no limit on giving the gift I would recommend giving a $25 gift card inside of a bag with a small personal gift such as coffee mug with cocoa mix inside. Just remember it is Christmas and it is the thought that counts.

Teachers can't get gifts?? There are websites dedicated to finding the perfect gift for a teacher. Several friends of mine and my aunt are teachers and all receive gifts every year. Anyway, for both my kids' teachers I got them $20 Wal Mart gift certificates and for their assistants I got them $15 ones. I think it depends on how happy you are with the job the teacher is doing and your own personal finances. My aunt teaches at a VERY exclusive private school-movie stars send their kids where she teaches so her gifts are worth more then what I make in a year. :-) I don't think there is a set amount, like 15-20% for a server. Just whatever you can comfortably afford is fine.

Who says teacher's can't get gifts?????

I'm a teacher and my favorite gifts are the homemade kind! I love baked cookies and such. I think my favorite gift of all time was some jams my student's grandmother made. Still, I wouldn't go overboard with the gifts. I give my own kids' teachers $5 gift cards to blockbuster strapped to a sealed bag of microwave popcorn!
