Yes, If you give the lower rank cat more attention you will cause the lower rank cat to be the target of much unwanted negative attention from the alfa cat (lots of unprovoked fights).

there is no such thing as an alpha cat. While cats can be territorial, with the stronger cat getting the best sunning spot or the food first, this is not alpha behavior. Cats are not pack animals.They operate outside a social hierarchy, and have no alphas. There is simply "i was here first", and it can change from day to day.
So, pet which ever one you want first. Even if cats were pack animals, when we bring them into our homes, HUMANS must become the alpha. Period. That means that because you are the biggest cat, you choose who you want to pet first.

Was the female cat there 1st? or was the male? They do their own picking. I do tend to give the alpha female alittle more attention so she doesen't attack the lower ranck.

you should pay more attention to the male because males will always be more lovey!!!and also pay more attention to the male because the male will feel bad that it is getting picked on by the female and you can achieve some thing by making the male feel loved!! also you can seperate them if you can and that will boost your relationship individually with the cats!! goooood luck!!!

It's not as important as with dogs--where status is everything because they work under a pack structure. So long as you give attention to both and say their name when you do so they know they have your attention, it'll be ok to give it to whichever one you want first.

to me i think that an animal sould get the same love like the others because they will get jelouse and dislike you and eachother and brother and sister shouldnt do that because you will hear fight and hisses like a the time. : >
