Get a companion dog breed, not a working breed that has higher prey drives and energy levels. I would also steer clear of the "Terrier Breeds" as they were bred to hunt small furry things. You can use the posted breed selector engines posted as a start in your search. Japanese Chin's are very "cat like" little dogs, you may want to read about them. Also Cavalier Spaniels usually do well with cats, but with any new puppy it will be your job to socialize them with the cats and never leave them alone together until you are sure they will be safe, if that is ever. There is lots of info on how to introduce a new dog to resident cats if you do a quick Google search.

A Miniature American Eskimo. They are a very fun loving and gentle dog. Their size is about 12-15 in (30-38 cm) at the shoulder. They also do not require too much grooming since their contains a natural oil that keeps them clean. Periodic Bathing is required though. This is a breed enjoys keeping active with running and playing so it needs to be exercised.

Well it depends on your lifestyle. Are you more of the outgoing type? Indoors looking for a cuddling companion??

Personally .. i would go with an American Eskimo. They can keep up with you on runs and keep you occupied when u want an excercise. But they're also GREAT house dogs (when properly trained of course). they don't ask for much and can keep themselves occupied when you're busy with your thing. and they LOVE to cuddle! I think it's an all around great dog. But the others had some pretty great answers too. good luck!

I kinda need more info but i will work with what you gave me.
If you dont mind yipping alittle and have a pretty niced sized yard, and have time to take it on walks a small MUTT from the ANIMAL SHELTER would be best. You will get a dog AND SAVE a LIFE

a dog @ a local shealter you should get maby an old one because that one probrably got abused and it will make you feel alot better but if you get a puppy its just a dog but if you get a older dog it will be a little easier to take care of . because you are a first time dog owner mabey you should get a puggle or a beagle i hear they are very friendly there will be alot at the shealter in china they eat them and to kill them they bang their heads against walls to crack their scull so get one of them they are really nice but you have to give it alot of love and care

Properly introduced, any breed can be friendly to cats.

I highly recommend Miniature Schnauzers. They are fairly small, affectionate, active and playful, and highly intelligent.
