The ice caps do not, in general contribute to ocean rising.
Ice floats, so, unless the sea level was many feet higher, the ice would have had to have been lifted into place some other way. Scientists have said that the amount of water in Greenland, if melted, would raise the sea level several inches to several feet. This is a lot of ice. Other melting of ice would not contribute to sea level rising since the ice is already in the water and displaces the equivalent amount of water already.
If it were possible to melt all the ice on Greenland or the Antartica that is above sea level, we would see a rise in ocean levels.
However, the additional heat in the atmosphere can increase storm event energy and could make what would have been a category 2 hurricane into a category 5 hurricane.
Also, the melting of the ice reduces the mating and feeding area of many species and, in some cases, may lead to extinction.
I am a Professional Civil Engineer in Orlando, FL ( http://www.mckeonengineering.com ) and have pondered this question for a while now.

Is global warming harmful? Who knows, that is the big question. Fact is, our planet used to be warmer than it is now. Researchers and scientists have proven that our climate has changed several times over the last couple million years, however, they cannot agree on if it is a good thing or a bad thing. They do agree we are in a warming trend. So who do you trust? It is hard to believe many of these scientists when they benefit (monetarily) from their own research in the way grants and funding on both sides of the issue. I mean one degree change may affect one thing, which inturn affects another thing, which helps something else, which thing kills off something else, which improves something else, which does yadda yadda yadda. So how do you calculate that. All I know is we live in a world which is ever changing.

the price of beer may go up ,because of potable water shortage
and food prices may rise because the third world slave countries got lots of problems due to Global Warming.
on e degree rise in temperature means 10% crop loss-
In Chiapas ,and Tabasco in Mexico .more then a million people became homeless overnight with water coming up to their roofs ,because of rains from super evaporation from the forests, this had never happened before.
Millions of animals died and the crocodile ,who are abundant in that area were delighted.
In India 3000 people died because of super storms .
Right now the average death toll annually is 150.000 due to Global warming
a few years ago a whole bunch in France as well.
these figures are already out of date and are expected to double soon.
In Northern China millions of people are running for their lives because regular dust storms so far have buried 900 villages under the sand
and the whole of northern China is turning into a dessert.
The Sahara is growing by 7 kilometers a year all around the edges ,like a slow burning fire shriveling up their neighbors
In the Kalahari huge rivers have dried up and thousand of species are gone due to their habitats disappearing
when the north pole is gone , you may have polar bears soon in America ,looking for a home ,as the bollweavel sings.
so that is the good news you can add another specie to your list ,instead of deleting hundreds that are disappearing
the biggest changes are invisible at micro biotic levels species are becoming extinct ,others are multiplying ,this affects the insect populations that follow ,and changes in that affect all that follows in the food chains ,All life is interrelated of both flora and fauna,
And we as being on the top of the food chain are always the last to know
when they killed all the mosquito's around the Danube for example all of the life in the woods disappeared ,they were a vital link in the food change.like the disappearing bees will drastically affect pollination ,some of that is part of our food production
So Global warming has its toll there are incidents all over the world ,
the greatest dangers are that the ocean currents will stop moving ,If all the ice is gone ,
This will change all of the worlds climates .
And if sea levels rise
the mass displacement of people will cause governments to fall ,and wide spread public violence will follow
when all the people from the low coastal areas (and this is where most of the worlds population is ) go looking for higher ground ,which is already occupied .

To tell you the truth, I would not have noticed much difference except that the winters are milder. In the 70's we had global cooling, so I would expect it to be warmer now. It's been rather nice actually, for the past few years. We had a hot dry summer last year, but nothing compared to the 1930's drought. This summer was one of the coolest and wettest that I can remember in 48 years. We had a summer in the 90's that was similar, many cloudy days hardly any days over 100ºF. In Oklahoma, we usually have a lot of days over 100ºF

There are a great deal of adverse effects of global warming, there are some positive ones as well, the net result on a global scale is definitely bad.
Some of the effects of global warming are outlined on this page...http://profend.com/global-warming/pages/effects.html

We are getting burnt from the sun. Ozone layer is stuffed, it's like sunscreen for the earth, melting Glaziers all over the world, both poles are breaking up, melting, raising sea levels, 60% of land will be under water soon. and only earth itself can fix it, pure fresh air is needed. Even if we all stop using motor vehicles, and planes for 10yrs, it's not long enough for the earth to fix the ozone. Will help bigtime th0.
Big goverment meetings going on, for companies to start paying carbon taxes, if we all dont band together and do our part, we l going to be paying for air taxes in 20yrs just to breathe.
HELLO!!!!!! You do live on earth don't you? Do your part in fixing our home planet, for all our grandkids and great grandkids to come.

Ocean levels are regulated by the ice caps, higher temperatures = less ice = higher ocean levels.
Why is this bad? Fewer nice beaches to vacation on. There are a few other possible reasons too. None as important the one I mentioned.

As the world has warmer temperatures Ice glaciers will melt which will cause a rise in sea level and then there will be floods all over the world Animals will become extinct as temps go up too.

first of all polar bears are dying as we speak, globabl warming is bad becuase the water levels rise, and cover lots of land, so for example florida will be under water, texas, and mass. will be becuase they stick out. also alot of other places. but them more so. if you are trying to eliminate globabl warming try using as less light as you can. becuase everytime you turn on a light, your realeasing bad chemicals into the air. THATS BAD!

because the world will get so hot all the ice will melt and all the animals in to south and north poles wont have any homes, and if they die, the predators who ate them wont have any food and they will die from starvation and the animals who ate those animals will also die from starvation and it will continue until the human race will die form having no meat!
