I know there's other service jobs that require tips but they are still paid well such as hairdressers.

Yeah I get that's it's assumed they will get tips, but despite that, why not give them minimum, tips are by chance. And customers shouldn't feel guilted into giving a tip to a potential bad waitress just because they know her wages.

Because they are cheep. The waitress should get the tip money as a plus for real good service and friendliness. I had some that needed to be fired. All in all they should get a good wage for doing the job. Look when the place is slow, they cant just sit there. They have to do all kinds of other work.

The feds and many states have a different "minimum wage" for tipped employees. This isn't just for servers, but for anyone whose tips typically total a certain defined amount. If the employee's tips plus the tipped employee minimum don't equal the regular minimum, the employer is required to make up the difference.

Jobs that take special skills and advanced education, like for example hairdressers, typically make more than jobs that don't have those requirements.

And before any servers out there jump on me, I agree that working as a server is hard work, and to be a good server requires that you develop various skills - that's why I normally tip well, and especially well if someone does a particularly good job.

Simple. It saves them money... by claiming that you will make at least minimum wage, out of their pockets they only pay like 2 dollars an hour. And in the case that they have pay more to make sure you get paid minimum wage (because you didn't make enough tips), it probably means that you are not treating their customers right and you are not getting tips. This helps them save money and make sure that YOU give great customer service. It's business. Often, the legislation does state a minimum wage for serving people. However, it is assumed that they will get tips, so it is set lower than the "normal" minimum wage. when they file their taxis, the government also assumes that they made at least 10% of their wage in tips.

That is a very good question, and I've never seen it here on Yahoo Answers.

I waited tables all through college, so I will offer an educated guess. My guess is employers pay wait staff very little so that they will HAVE TO rely on their tips. Why? Because if a waitress or waiter gives poor service, he/she will receive a poor tip. Restaurant owners want their diners to have a great experience, including great table service and a way to ensure that is to encourage wait staff to do their best.

If waiters and waitresses received a 'set' salary, many of them would work less hard at giving great service, because it wouldn't matter at the end of the week when they received their paycheck.

That's my guess.....I hope I've helped.

Well, it is much more cost-effective for them this way. In their mind, why pay someone more than necessary? Since legally they don't have to may even minimum wage, there is really not much incentive at most places.
