I agree that the doormen deserve something, and I have one doorman that always goes out of his way to carry packages up for me, and will deliver stuff up, instead of making me come down. Now having said that, I am curious how the best way to handle this holiday season.

There are 8 doormen, and usually 2 on duty at a time, is it appropriate to tip one more than the others?

If we are staying at a corporate apartment, and there are 7 of us with apartments there, should we all go in together and make it a nice large gift from all of us?

And do we/I give the gift to all of them to divide up? Or to each of them individually?

Thanks!

Personally, I would tip each of them myself - does not have to be the same amount - the one who always makes the extra effort to help would get a bit more along with a note of extra thanks for always going the extra mile. I would ask the others in the complex if they would like to chip in on a group gift - some may not want to participate - if they all do, great! But the doormen will know that YOU appreciate their service and will keep putting forth their best efforts to help you out.

If you find one more helpful then the others then go ahead and tip that one more. Put it in a card. They shouldn't show the others because that is just rude.

Going in for a larger gift with all people isnt' the best option. People don't like being told to contribute to something or how much. Let them do their own thing they might not feel the same about the service as you are getting.

At the Holiday season I personally think that it would be nice to tip the people that "work" for you basically everyday, and don't actually "cost" you money. In other words, the postman doesn't collect money from you each time he delivers mail, sure our taxes help out but at the Holidays it's nice to say "
Thank you for doing a good job all year! Merry Christmas, be happy and well in the coming New Year.
Yes, I believe in tipping!!!
Anyway, as for your question I think it's a personal decision. If everyone agrees to pool their money and present it as 1 present for all, that's a pretty good idea. And maybe slip the favorite one and extra little bit as an extra "THANK YOU, MERRY CHRISTMAS!"
Be well!

No!! Tipping is a reward for good service with a pleasant demeanor. Therefore it is individually earned!
