You know pairs of jeans? well have you noticed that in the front pockets, there is usually a smaller pocket on the inside of at least one of them?
And have you noticed that this pocket is so pointlessly small that virtually nothing at all can fit in it, and if you did actually manage to find something that does (like a small coin) then you will find that you will have severe difficulty getting it out again because your fingers will not even fit into the miniscule pocket to get the damn thing back out again!!

I mean, what is the point of that???

I use it to keep a key in or some random power drill screw head.

Quite handy imo.

I gather you've never seen the Levi Strauss commercial then. Set in the 1920, a young gentleman stops at a pharmacy to pick up a little 'insurance' before his date. I believe the tag line went something like "Invented in 1876, abused ever since."
Yes, the pocket was originally designed for a pocket watch, but is useful for other things that you may need that you don't want to fall out and get lost.

When jeans were first designed, this pocket was for a pocket watch. The watch had a chain on it so it could be pulled out. After the Wrist watch cam out, this pocket got much smaller. Coveralls also had a pocket like this on the bib. Suits also had a small pocket for pocket watches.

It's called the "Quarter Pocket". It was designed and used when there were no cell phones only pay phones for people to hold a quarter in incase they needed to call their mommy/daddy to come and pick them up.
