he was a communications specialist he kept in contact with other units and also carried a weapon. He was a grunt first and foremost and besides all his other equipment he carried a heavy radio on his back.

They talked on the radio. And got shot fairly often due to the fact that their radios were used to call in airstrikes on the enemy.

He relayed coordinates to Artillery support,and info from base command and other units, but a lot were targets for snipers.
