I was having second thoughts on a Nikon d40x or the Canon Rebel Xti.

Price Range of $800/700 less

Canon and Nikon are both good cameras. However, I like to offer an alternative.

Look at the Pentax K100D, K100D Super and K10D. All 3 have Image Stabilization (IS) in the camera body and you can use every K-mount lens ever made. Yes, they will be manual focus but you'll still have the benefit of IS.

The 100 series are both 6.1mp; the Super added sensor dust removal. The 10 is 10mp and has dust removal.

Try the Canon Rebel XT, the Nikon D40 or D40x, or the Pentax K100D.

I already have Nikon lenses, so the choice is easy for me--a Nikon.

If I were just starting out and buying only on specs, I'd probably pick the Rebel XT. But if I were starting out and actually handled the cameras, Nikon would be the winner. The Nikon cameras are just plain higher quality in build/construction/ergonomics when actually handled in person. You opinion may be different, hence I always urge actually handling cameras in person to help make an important decision. Think of it like test driving a car.

Either one would be a good choice. Cnet.com suggests spending a little more money and getting the Nikon d80, saying the Canon xti is a "disappointing follow up to the Canon xt" and ranking it about even with the Nikon d40x but below the Nikon d80.

Both are great DSLRs and you could not go wrong with either pick. I love my Canon XTi, it offers a hole lot of features for your money.
