Death of a daredevil: The extraordinary, magnificent life of Evel Knievel
The stunt rider had an unrivalled ability to attract trouble.

Published: 02 December 2007
There will have to be a nominal cause recorded on the death certificate of Robert Craig "Evel" Knievel, who died on Friday aged 69, but it is unlikely to be as complete as it should. There isn't the space. So, unencumbered by the restraints of US form-filling, here is what should be there: diabetes, pulmonary fibrosis, two strokes, hepatitis C, a hip replacement, arthritis, liver transplant, 38 formerly shattered bones, including a seven-times-broken back, twice-crushed pelvis and frequently fractured legs, plus several comas, one lasting 29 days.

This is one man that even John Wayne wished he could be like. He carved a name for himself that deservingly need's to be remembered forever in American history. He was the extreme sports ambassador before the sport was ever invented. He was Evil Knievel.

I heard that yesterday, pretty sad. He was one cool dude. I watched him do his stunts all the time. I used to have his toys and everything. As alot said in here yesterday everyone mocked his jumps to some degree. I did. Skinned alot of knee's and elbows. He was one tough motor scooter.

I'm going to take the easy way out and say Mark Martin. A top 5 finish by the 8 car would not surprise me at all. I also think his teammate, Martin Truex Jr, will finish in the top 10 this week at Dover. dalejr4ever is an awesome contributor in the NASCAR forum, I honor you. Have a great day. 3 STR8 N 08!!!

Evil Knievel was a true dare devil. A true pioneer to the sport. I have never seen a Triumph motorcycle look so cool, as when Evil Knievel was riding. He is an icon to the sport of stunt riding.

Hats off to a legend, and one amazing guy. He will never be outdone. I watched a special on the History Channel several months ago. He told of how back in early 70's Harley Davidson gave him all his motorcycles to make his jumps. Imagine going 200 and 300' on a Harley with the primitave shocks and springs of yesteryear...

Yes, it was all over the news. He will be sadly missed, however maybe he can make that Snake River jump now. I totally agree with your extreme sports analogy. Robbie is pretty good, but, I don't think he will ever be willing to take the chances that his dad did. Look at it this way although sad, he is without pain which I am sure he lived with every day. May he rest in peace...........

I read about that. It's a shame, but given all the medical problems he's had, it was his time. May he rest in piece.
