I think the major benefit is travel to large cities with big airports.

Pay must be a function of how much the airline can spare after it pays for fuel and competes with other airlines.

I expect you would need to stand/walk for long periods, while balancing drinks, food, blankets or pillows on a tilting-bucking mode of transportation for cranky, nervous, anxious passengers who will be unlikely to tip.
