They assume this because this is the way they have been hypnotised to think.
You are the 'fish swimming against the shoal' and the other fish cannot understand why!
The shoal mentality 'screams' there is a shark, a shark!!! and you can now say yes! there is a shark, but now it is behind me!
I have said this a number of times and I shall never tire of saying it:
Religion is your breath; life's purpose is to teach you how to use your breath to flame the Fire of God in your heart and attain union with the divine.
Every established 'religion' is merely a school of thought - and like every school before you enrol, you must ask... what is the aim and purpose of this school and how can it prove to me that its goals are attainable?
A thought:
Happy people love life and want to share their love and happiness; bitter, miserable people are only content when they have made others like themselves, bitter and malcontent.
When you choose to leave an established school of thought, you are 'challenging' their belief system and most people respond to this type of challenge with anger.
Why?
Because their 'religion' is powerless to enable them to love you, as they say they do.
You have liberated yourself, BREATH DEEP, God is in your heart and do not be tempted to treat them the way they have treated you... you will go from strength to strength.
Forge on and when they slander you, remind them that we can never live in heaven, while they insist on building hell.

I don't do that. In real life and on Y!A, I assume the people I'm around either come from some branch of Christianity or are atheist/agnostic. In other words, I'm not of those beliefs. I think what you're talking about happens when people are limited in their world view. You said "automatically assume," so in your question if I'm assuming something automatically, that would mean it's got nothing to do with thinking. Just a natural, automatic reaction. If all you see are Christians, then it's only natural for you to expect the people you talk to be Christian. It's kind of like how stereotypes work. You've already got a built up opinion of someone, so when you see them you don't give them much of a chance to change that opinion. Eh. To me, it doesn't matter even if they do give me the same reaction. I'll either ignore them and walk away, explain to them why their view could offend someone, or say something snarky if I'm truly offended. **I just wanted to clarify that I think a lot of the people I come across are either Christian or atheist/agnostic because those are the beliefs of many of the people I'm surrounded by. I didn't realize how weird it sounded before until now.

What was your religion before? Some of them are best left behind.
But God and Jesus are real and very important through out our whole lives. This country was started by a need of "Freedom of Religion". It is in the First Amendment. It was discovered that the Catholic Church was not teaching what the Bible did say. And it would not allow the Bible to be printed, until they lost so many people they figured they had better do something before they lost them all. Then only the New Testament was printed for the Catholics, about 1625.
Look for truth. Think about this. IF God did not create the earth and all else, where did the first atom come from that split into two, then four, then eight, ... into all there is now and all the different kinds of atoms too? With science you need matter to start with. And there wasn't any matter to start with.

Change of religion is not crime. If the conscience says that your changing it will do more good to the Society than to your selfish ego, it is very good. Change just for fun is'nt. Think ten times, before trying for a change

A person is capable of having faith in God and acceptance of Jesus without going to Church all the time or being religious. For me to say being religious is the act of or participation in rituals set in place by man. Jesus is interested in the heart and desire to love your neighbor as yourself and to love you Lord with all your heart and mind. God's morals are considered to be the highest and what is righteous, to go away from God is considered by the people you speak of as having a lesser moral compass. Man has tried to set their own constitution of what is a acceptable moral level to live by. All fall short of the Glory of God. We are to keep sight of Jesus to keep our salvation and to love others by Godly standards. Keep a joyful heart and talk to God on your own and keep Jesus in your heart. Peace to you.

Trust God. Maybe your religion was bad, but that doesn't mean that you can't trust God without them around.

Its a last desperate tactic to get you to come back to their faith. Make you feel bad so you come back and try to feel good.
