when they come to the USA? One of our contributors suggest this is the case. I find that hard to believe. Is this true? Our government, as googy as they are, can't possibly know that people are here illegally, and then give them a SS# and tax them without repayment or credit or service of those monies paid? Or can they?
Seems to me the taxes that are paid are more likely paid against fraudulent, stolen or forged SS# that belong to American citizens. Anyone know?

The US Government does not give illegals special SS#'s. If an illegal gets a valid SS# he is not illegal anymore.

You are correct in your thought that most illegals obtain a fraudulent SS# and that is how they are taxed.

The IRS gives out an ITIN. The ITIN is 9 digits and formatted the same way as an SSN, but used a different numbering system. The ITIN cannot be used to get a job.

The ITIN is a solution to the fact that illegal aliens do work. If the illegal alien "borrows" an SSN, they still must file, but they can't file under the SSN because it isn't theirs. Instead, they file under the ITIN. They are still liable for all taxes. (The ITIN cannot be used to claim EIC.) Once the IRS knows to whom the income belonged to, they disconnect the earnings records from the true owner.

And contrary to another poster, it is possible for an illegal alien who lives in the US all year to file a joint return with his wife and claim dependents even if he is not here on a visa--and even if the wife/children are all still living in Mexico. (The IRS doesn't distinguish between legal and illegal--if you are not a citizen or don't have a green card, the IRS will go by time in determining if the taxpayer is resident alien or a non-resident alien for tax purposes. For dependents, the IRS will count residents of Canada and Mexico as well as US citizens/residents.)

It is possible for an illegal to get a TIN (taxpayer identification number).

Even if someone is in the US illegally, they are still legally responsible to pay taxes. You're right, many either work "under the table" and don't pay the taxes at all, or work using a stolen SS#.

no you can not get a ssn with out the proper immigraton documentation. they can get an individual tax payer identification number so they can file taxes, or be listed as a dependent on their spouses return, but only if they are here legally on a visa. copies of all those documents are required. i just went through all this with my wife and step daughters.

If you are an illegal guest why would you want the IRS to know all about it. Will be like telling the police you are selling illegal drugs outta your house. Only an idiot will think your gibberish is true.
