You can't legally download Microsoft Word for free unless you don't care about the legal actions. However, you can download OpenOffice for free from http://download.openoffice.org/index.html.

With OpenOffice, you can use "Writer" which is very similar to the Microsoft Word in both interface and functions. You can open* and save your document in Microsoft Word's .doc format, so you don't have to worry about compatibility issues.

* This, however, does not work for MS office 2007. In office 2007, you can export the file and open in it but importing to Writer is a big problem.

You don't need it. Believe me. You need OpenOffice.

It's free and open source.

OpenOffice is MS Word compatible (although not as yet with the newest 2007 formats). Most companies are running 2007 Office in compatibility mode which saves as 2003 format which OpenOffice can read and write to.

I use it at home and MS Office 2007 at work and it works really well.

MS Word is not free
If you want to buy:

Otherwise, if you're looking for a freebie, there's Open Office which is freeware, works like Word, and you can convert it online, free, at www.media-convert.com
