Does the ps3 which is 40gb play ps2 games?

I heard that they didn't work on there.

It's correct - 40GB doesn't play them at all - this console doesn't have any chips from PS2 (60GB has two chips, 80GB has one).

The 40GB doesn't play PS2 games but it does play PS1 games.
