I just fed my kittens Royal canin veterinary diet , and that was when I thought I should double check the FDA website, and this is what I found. Apparently the update is from Oct 31 2007, so I was wondering if my kittens are at risk? What symptoms should I look for?

Here's the link.

I worked in a pet store when all the recalls happened. After the FDA found out that tainted foods were causing pets to get sick, they started going through everybody's ingredients and quality to check for other risks. That was earlier this year and anything that needed improvement or adjustments was recalled. They shouldn't be putting any foods on the shelf unless the manufacturer has fixed the problem. Royal Canin is a great food so my guess is that is info from the original recall. The best place to ask would be the pet store you bought the food from. If there is any talk of a recall, Royal Canin would alert the pet store's distributor and they would notify the pet store. Also check the Royal Canin website. Just as a precaution, I stopped feeding my pets any foods that either purchases their ingredients overseas or had their food processed overseas. The pet stores should know this information and direct you to a pet food or type of food by Royal Canin that is 100% US made. If you are worried your cats are getting sick, just look for anything out of the ordinary. If they seem lethargic, vomiting more than usual or if vomit does not look like a normal hairball, keep track of the amount of waste in their litter box and watch for blood. You know your cats more than anyone so make sure they are acting like themselves.

It would be very benefitial if the web site would say WHICH of the dry Royal Canin foods was affected, they make some 30 or so different types. I just looked at the bag we have, the Royal Canin Siamese 38, it doesn't have rice glutin in it.

I haven't been able to find any other information online about this latest recall.

(added) I just went back to the site and tried clicking on some of the others--this looks like it's all from the lists earlier this year with the big scare, the 'updated date'of Oct. 31, 2007 is on ALL their entries. I think this old news. Every Royal Canin recall bit I've found online was dated prior to July of this year.

There is no food that is completely safe from recall, many things can happen during the process of making it. The best bet is to research the food online you like and pay attention to how the company handled the recall. If it took them too long to pull the food you might be wary of trusting them again. For instance I loved Premium Edge by Diamond Pet Foods. Many experts were reporting problems for 6mos to a year before they even began recalls. And when they did they recalled such a small amount by lot number, that they missed so many foods that needed recalled for Vitamin B12 deficiency that my cats had severe symptoms 6 months after beginning the food. Royal Canin is a pretty good food. Take the time to see how the company handled the recall. That's all I can say as to Should I Trust this Company again.

veterinary diets have a tendancy to contain 4D grade meats and byproducts which do not provide adequate nutrients for your pet. try a grain free human grade meat based diet like Innova EVO or the like. you will not need to worry about recalls because they own some of their own facilities and use high quality ingredients. a raw diet is always the best but at least a canned food that is fit for human consumption. this way you will not have to worry about recalls. the symptoms would probably be diarreah vomiting or really any type of behavior that you are not used to or seems even slightly odd

I'd say change their food...try one of the foods on the link below...as far as I know their foods have never been recalled. I personally feed my cats and dogs California Natural.
