Okay, now I'm in GA so maybe it's different over on the West coast, but I was tiped when I was an altar server at a funeral. Like $5, but I was specifically asked to be the server of that funeral by the family members of the deceased.

Usually at weddings and funerals, the Director/Priest does get tiped, but that might just be how it's done down here.

One usually tips when a service is being done. Yes, it is the Priest's job to help his flock, but on the same note, it's the waiter's job to give you your food, yet we tip them....

Maybe the alter boys or musicians. Funeral directors and priests get amply paid. My priest owns a bmw and a harley--something I will maybe never be able to afford. They also wear $10,000 robes--I don't think they're hurting for money. Besides, they are technically supposed to be giving of their money and live simple lives. If you feel they've been exceptional, I would, instead, give them a small gift and tell them how much you appreciate them.

I believe it is customary to tip priests and ministers about $100. That's what we did when we buried my mother. As for tipping funeral directors and alter boys I don't believe this is necessary. Also, I don't think you need to tip the pallbearers. But, a $50 tip for someone who sang or played music is customary.

I'm not in CA but it doesn't matter -- priests are people too. If they do a good job then base your compensation on that fact. Cut the smart remarks.

i don't live in CA, but it's something to think about. i wonder if they were tipped at my grandparents' funerals. i need to call my mom and ask.
i know my parents have already paid for their funerals; i wonder if we (the kids) need to tip anyone when they die.

Priests get tipped daily by their free living expenses and lack of a hard working job.
