If it's someone I don't know, I never answer it. I do, however, ask them who they are/what they want through my closed and locked door. I read an article by a local police officer saying this was the safest thing to do. If it is someone intending to burglarize your home and you don't answer and pretend not to be home, odds are they will try to break in. If you call out "I'm not interested," they will usually leave. If they don't, then tell them you're calling the police. Hopefully that will get rid of them.

It's sad that you live in a city where you do not feel safe. I fear that this is becoming more and more commonplace.
That said, I live in a smaller Midwestern town and I feel compelled to lock my doors, both at night and during the day when I am home. I know some of my neighbors do not lock their doors but I lived in Chicago for a time and learned my lesson! I will open the door but only if I recognize the individual. I do have a police officer who lives nearby and also our PD is only a few short blocks away so I have a bit of a comfort level if I should call. I'm sure that isn't the way it goes in L.A.
I hope someday you learn to trust again.

I live in suburban NC in what used to be a safe neighborhood, and I do not open my door unless I know the person or am expecting a delivery or service call. I have a sign up next to the doorbell warning off bible thumpers and solicitors, too.
I did have a scary incident where I opened the door to a person who appeared to be in need. Had my then infant son not been asleep on the couch, I think the man would've robbed me and my husband ... or worse. Now that I'm back on maternity leave with that now 3-year-old son and his 3-month-old sister, I don't care about offending people. I worry most about protecting my family.

It depends on if I know the person or not. I live in a small town in Tennessee and I know most people who knock on my door. I am in my early 20's and there have only been a hand full of people who I have not opened the door to in my lifetime.

I only answer the door if I am expecting someone or if I recognize them through the peephole. Either I had to give you permission to come over and knock, or you have to be someone I know who needs something and could not call. Otherwise, you are not welcome.
I also make sure I call before showing up at someone's home, even family, unless it is an emergency and I cannot call ahead.

Sometimes, and only if I look through the peephole first. I'm so sick of candy sellers, paper sellers, the people that come around and try to sell magazines, it irritates me. I live across the street from a shopping center, for crying out loud! I can cross the damn street and buy what I want and when I want it.
I haven't had scary problems yet. I'm in San Marcos, CA

No unless they call ahead of time, people bug in my neighborhood. But its not 'cause we are scared my door is unlocked all day during the day so fam and friends can walk in whenever. They know I don't like answering the door as much as I don't like talking on the phone for hours about nothing. Denver,Co

i live in north east NJ and my friends live far away so they better call before trying to come to my house. anyone who lives closer better use their cell to call me when they try to visit my house. i look out the window to see who is at the front door BEFORE i even think about opening the door. if its someone i dont know, they have to talk to be from the window cause im NOT coming to the door. once, the cops where at my front door at 3am in plain clothes and i called the police station to see if it was really the police at my door. i could hear the police on the phone talking to the ones at the door and i could hear the walkie talkie of the police at the door talking to the ones on my phone. other than that, i wouldnt open the door to THEM EITHER !

as a single mother with an infant, and in this day and age, unfortunately, i do not open my door unless i know who it is. i do not live in a particularly dangerous city, i just try to be careful. i too, however, have had strange people/situations coming to my door. several times millitary dressed individuals came looking for someone that i didn't know. they came by several times. i finally called a recruiting office and they told me that the millitary is not allowed to harass you like that. that was pretty much when i stopped opening the door to people i didn't know.

Yes I answer the door. I live in Milwaukee, WI and if someone rings the doorbell, I answer it. Of course, my phone is nearby but I haven't had a problem and call me naive, but I prefer to retain a modicum of trust in my fellow citizens.
