If you use your debit card AS a debit card - which means that any time you swipe it you put in your PIN number this should not happen. When you use your card as an ATM card the money comes out automatically so you should be accepted or declined immediately, based on the funds in your account.

If your card has a MasterCard or Visa symbol then it can be used at a store that doesn't let you use a debit card. The money is processed by Visa or MasterCard as a "charge." Which takes about 48 hours to come out of your account, but also means you don't have to have the funds IN your account when you use the card. Which sounds like what's happening in this case.

Bottom line - you can go into your bank and tell them that you don't want your card to be a "dual" card. You ONLY want it to be an ATM card and not be a debit/credit card. This way you will only be able to use it as an ATM card and won't get caught short. But it also means you may not be able to use it at places like clothing stores or the mall, because they use the "credit card" feature to process the money, not the ATM feature.

If the bank won't do this for you then switch banks. Good luck to you!

Well the bad news is there are no banks that are going to block you from overdrafting your account (see article below). Banks make big money from these fees. So the responsibility is on you to check the availability of funds in your checking account on a regular basis and create a budget for yourself so you are not constantly emptying your checking account. Other than that banks are going to charge you up a storm unless you obtain good enough credit to get overdraft protection. But once again, good credit takes financial discipline.

I wish you luck.

You are able to use it because it takes a day or two for transactions to process. Try keeping track of your account so you know how much money you have or do not. ATM's also run at least a day behind/ Keep track of you deposits and usage that is not up to the bank but is your responsibility, you should know how much you have to spend, or how much you have remaining in your account.

My card is the same way. You MUST learn to keep up with purchases, write them down, or keep your reciepts in a separate area of your wallet and constantly add them up.
Monitor your account online if you can, it's usually more accurate than inquiring at the ATM.

Maybe you should learn how to manage your money better. Like by not spending money you don't have. You can check your balance online, on the phone, or at an ATM. Why don't you do so?

You're ruining your credit and changing banks isn't going to help you.

Balance your checking account or get overdraft protection tied to your checking account so you don't get charged the crazy bank fees.
