We just have regular cable, not digital, and we don't plan to upgrade. We just want the new tv and to watch the same channels we have.

You wont need it - but you should get it.

Buying a HDTV without some type of HD service is like buying a boat while you live in the dessert.

I am getting 'basic' service from my cable company with about 6 HD channels for $24. It should not be that much more for you to upgrade. Just fight the pressure to subscribe to X premium channels.

Strong Suggestion - get a HD-DVR. This thing is like a Tivo and it will change the way you watch TV.

Get a new HDTV with NTSC, ATSC and QAM tuning plus a slot for a cable card. If you do that you should be ready for all cable channels once your cable company is in accordance with the new US laws concerning cable channel access without a cable box.

Don't live in the US? Check the standards that apply where you live.

You should get an HDTV cable ready model TV.(one with the digital tuner box built into it.) Soon the country will be converting to all digital TV(as early as 2009) please see www.dtvanswers.com -- and if the tv you buy does not have a digital converter built into it--then you will need a new cable box.
