Yahoo recently posted a story on who and how much you should tip people this holiday season. I was surprised that pizza deleiver drivers were not included. I work part time as one and I am amazed how little I get tipped. I also deliver in North Dakota where it's frigid this time of year and the roads are snow covered. I understand people need to be careful with their money during the holidays but us drivers make pocket change per hour, we use our own cars and gas and depend on getting decent tips. I think at least 2 dollars for every 10 spent is sufficient. Do people look down on us and don't think we are worthy of a tip? I'd like to hear your thoughs.

9 inches of snow fell last night. I delivered right as the storm ended with streets not plowed, trudging through unshoveled driveways and sidewalks. My average tip was about a dollar and I got stiffed at least 4 times. I'm amazed how greedy people are.

The way I see it The Pizza Delivery Guy gets the best tips among all other delivery people! Most people willingly give a 15 to 20% tip, which I think is quite reasonable! In contrast postmen, grocery delivery guys, etc. get a pittance!!!

About 3 years ago the Pizza chains put a hurting on their drivers when they started adding delivery fees to the bills. A lot of customers mistakenly believe that fee goes to the driver. This being said I use to work for Pizza Hut, but not as a driver. Typically the drivers expected a 15-20% tip. I've seen how those guys push to get the pizza to the customer hot and fresh and the better ones would be sure to bring condiments (hot peppers and parmesian packets) and sometimes extra napkins or paper plates.

Typically I tip a minimum of $2 (I live a lone so usually it's a medium pizza on a coupon) but on the rare occasions I'm feeding a few friends 5 or even 10 for a tip isn't unreasonable. Of course the driver bringing the condiments and napkins may get the $5 for a single pizza too.

I understand where you are coming from. I used to work as an assistant manager and it made me mad when people would call while there's snow and ice on the ground demanding to know what was taking so long when they ordered 45 min ago. Here's why :
A) YOU are NOT the only customer to decide the roads are too bad to drive on and therefore have decided to get delivery (it's a long list you've just added to)
B) the weather is BAD, drivers have to go slower (though they may not want to) because of other people and/or wrecks on the road
C) There are only a handful of drivers willing to risk their car and lives to bring YOU dinner. Becuase if they get into an accident most likely they'll be suspended sometimes with a minimum of 2 years.
That's something to think about. THE DRIVERS are risking THIER NECKS to bring you a $20 pizza. The least you could do is give them at least $5 if not more because they work hard to do what they can. I tip at least 5 in normal weather. and if I can afford it 10 in the winter weather because it's freakin cold and they are busting their balls for minimum wage!!
Thanks for letting me rant.

Well, I think this is a little difficult to answer since you're referring to holiday tipping. Holiday tipping is based on the service that has been provided through out the year. Normally, I do not receive the same deliverer when I order a pizza, so for me personally I wouldn't give a holiday tip.

As for regular tipping, I'll do a minimum of $5. If the order is huge, (4+ pizzas) at least $10 and higher depending on the actual bill. Of course this is all dependent on how long it takes for the pizza to get here and if it's still hot; at the very least warm.

But here's a blurb from CNN/Money;
Food delivery person:* 10% of the bill (excl. tax), at least $1 for bills up to $10. Should tip 15%-20% for a difficult delivery.

You should always tip the delivery guy. to not tip is rude, and to tell the delivery guy to keep the change up to the next dollar is just plain insulting! I am a delivery driver and am living off my tips, luckily I am mostly reimbursed for most of my gas by the store. But that does not cover accelerated maintenance schedule from the increased mileage or the higher insurance rates I have to pay.
What many people don't realize is we are also taxed on our tips, the same as food servers and bartenders. We are taxed at 10%. Sometimes we make more...sometimes we are lucky to make that much...

I work for Papa John's in IN. We charge a delivery fee of 1.50. High, I know. But that fee goes to the store for the offset of the mileage they have to pay us. I make minimum wage hourly, and in IN that is 5.85. In the area I deliver, my average tip is $3-4. This isn't bad, but I have found that usually, people tip LESS is bad or severe weather. Last night, we were hit with snow, then ice, then rain. The roads were a sheet of ice all night. And for 10 hours, my average tip was just short of $3!

Also, I personally tip better in the holiday season. As a driver, I tip $5 on every order, not matter the cost. But in the months of November and December I will tip a minimum of $8 for every order, regardless of price. The way I see it, and is my practice, is that if I can't afford a tip, I won't order delivery.

I too deliver pizzas part time for Dominoes and it sucks when I don't get tipped.Customers should tip as much as they can afford .With the price of gas the pizza companys don't pay driver that much for each delivery,on average about $1.10 to a $1.50 per delivery. That does not pay for a single gallon of gas, when in some areas around the country gas is over $3.00 a gallon. That means Drivers have to come up with extra money to pay for gas.The reason that there is a delivery fee is that the companies can and will charge for delivery.

I used to be a delivery driver for pizza hut and the delivery charge does turn ppl off of tipping but during the holidays most people with tip a min. of 5 dollars and it helps when you only make 7 dollars an hour and pay for gas and car upkeep.

A tip could be a great deal favored, because of the fact the delivery cost is going to the business enterprise to pay for the motive force's gasoline. many times cases, nutrition workers who might get information are paid decrease than minimum salary as that's believed that information will make up the version. Too, that's the guy who only introduced you a yummy dinner so which you probably did not ought to a) cook, b) stress someplace for on the spot nutrition, and c) miss any of the pastime on television. That merits a tip.

I always tip my Pizza guy, unless I get someone that's a complete jerk or the order is ice cold. If it's a nice delivery person and good service I tip $4-5 bucks on a $20 something order, or more depending on the price of the order.

If I don't want to tip, then I'll order it for pick-up. On the rare occasion where I have to order it for delivery, that means the weather condition makes it really troublesome or discouraging for me to drive out. I'd definitely appreciate the delivery man even more... so 20% makes sense. If the service is good, (like condiments, napkins, hot food), a few bucks extra on top of the 20% is nothing... but it will mean a great deal to the delivery man.
