I bought a car at an auction, i will get the pink slip (according to them) within one month. do i need to wait for the pink slip? if i can sell it without the pink slip, what forms do i need to fill out? i live in california so the information should be for that state. i know i need to go to CA DMV website, but there is too much information, a quick and short answer will be appreciated..thanks

I'm in CA, and having sold and bought a few cars, here's what I know:
You should have received a bill of sale at the auction. That is sufficient proof of ownership, should you be driving the car and got pulled over. DMV will send you a "formal" title later, but the bill of sale is sufficient proof of ownership for you to sell it.
As you have not received the title (rainbow title) yet (pink slips are out of date), you need to fill out
http://www.dmv.ca.gov/forms/reg/reg227.pdf
And you do the 4th one, paperless title, transfer.

Did the guy who sold it you get it smogged first? It's a Ca state law that the seller is responsible for the smog certificate. So if he didn't it's now your responsibility. If your information is on the back of the title (pink slip), you need to go to the DMV with the person you're selling it to so the title and registration can be put in his/her name. You'll need to show proof if ID so be sure to bring your CDL with you. Explain that you bought the Jeep and now you're selling it and you've never done a title transfer or registered it.Be sure to bring a current smog certificate as well. If your info is not on the back of the pink slip, just sell it. Give the paperwork to the new owner, along with the smog certificate and let him/her do the transfer on their own.

The paperwork needs to be processed by the DMV. You need to have the title to be able to sell it, unless it is already in the system and you can do a "lost title" affadavit. You may want to ask the DMV for a fast way if you have a hot buyer.

No, cars are sold by title, and without one you can't sell it.
You should have been handed the title when you bought it.

So you're saying the DMV has not sent you the title, or the seller has not sent it to you?
